hotel choice!

hi,

which would be a better option for a 4 night stay, holiday inn express soho or crowne plaza kowloon east?

would be traveling with 7 year old kids and would be using the public transport.

how long does it take to travel for Tseung Kwan O Station to the main tourist areas by mrt?

thanks

Soho is definitely a more convenient location than Tsueng Kwan O. If you stay in Tseung Kwan O, add about 30 to 40 minutes to the commute going to your sight seeing spots as compared to from Soho.

Holiday Inn Express SoHo is much more centrally located, on HK Island, more convenient for reaching most popular attractions and there is much more of interest in the surrounding area. Crowne Plaza Kowloon East is part of a huge new development above Tsueng Kwan O MTR Station which includes apartment blocks, hotels and shopping mall. Tsueng Kwan O is one of HK's new towns which is still being developed and reclamation and development work is still taking place around the waterfront area, across from the hotel. Tsuen Kwan O seems a rather soulless place to me and its not actually in Kowloon East, its in Sai Kung District. There are some pictures of the Tsuen Kwan O Station Development including the hotel here;

You can use the MTR Journey Planner to estimate journey times from Tsuen Kwan O (TKO) but not that the planner indicates the fastest time, platform to platform but can vary according to time taken to change lines at interconnecting stations and getting between surface and platform at beginning and end of each journey can take time eg from TKO to Central the planner shows 26 mins but in reality its more like 35 mins from entering TKO Station to leaving Central Station. TKO is probably not going to be convenient if you intend returning to the hotel during the day and then going out again later in the day.

I don't know how rates compare between the hotels but if you get a better deal at Crowne Plaza you may consider the inconvenience of the location worthwhile. Suggest you read through some of the reviews of both hotels.

Right next to TKO station, besides Crowne Plaza Kowloon East, its sister property Holiday Inn Express Kowloon East is also located right there. Crowne Plaza is quite a bit nicer than HIE overall but both are very new properties. There are two large shopping malls connected to the station and the hotels. While they are on the MTR Line, the trains get very very crowded during morning rush hour. It's best to avoid taking MTR from 8 to 9am as a result.

HIE also has properties at SoHo (Jervois St) and Causeway Bay next to Times Square. These two locations are much more centrally located. Price-compare to see if they fit your budget.

TKO is faar from main tourists attractions! Try to stay in hotels around Causeway Bay, Central, Wan chai or Kowloon area for better access to popular touristy sites

Crowne Plaza in Causeway Bay is in an ideal location if you need another option.

If you will be staying at a Holiday Inn Express, don't expect large rooms.

There is a very good authentic French creperie right next door to HIE at Jervois St.

Many of the eateries in the immediate two blocks of HIE SoHo are closed on Sundays and might close earlier in the evening. They primarily cater to office workers overflowing from Central for lunch.

Of course, another block or two in most directions, you will find many other choices still.
