Nine hours Hong Kong Airport Early

I have seen a few posts regarding spending nine hours in Hong Kong Airport but not many when you arrive at 5.00 am. We have had two day stop overs a couple of times in the distant past but we are thinking of maybe seeing the Big Buddha in our nine hour stop over this time. It appears that the gondola starts at 10.00 am so we are wondering if there is anywhere nice to walk before catching it and whether on a Friday we will have to line up for hours to get on board. Looking forward to hearing from anyone who has filled in some time near the airport from 6.00 am to 10.00 am. By the way we only have a short flight to Guilin and the beginning of a month in China after our stop over. Having already spent nine hours in Hong Hong airport on a previous trip we are keen to get out this time after a ten hour flight from Sydney. We also are keen to keep costs down as this China trip is already depriving our children much of their inheritance.

Don't wait for the Ngong Ping 360 cable car to open at 10 am. A very wasteful use of your short layover hours.

You may get out of immigration/custom at as early at 5:30 am. Have some breakfast at the airport.

Take bus S1 to Tung Chung MTR Station. (S1 starts at 5:30 am, a bus every 10 minute, the ride is about 15 - 20 min).

Take Lantao Bus 23 from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping. Take the 8:10 am bus. (The earliest departure is 7:15 am on weekdays.)

50 minutes for the ride. You get up to Ngong Ping at 9:00 am. Po Lin opens at 8 am. Tour that first. Big Buddha Statue opens at 10 am. Spend an hour or so. At 11 am, you are done. Walk to the cable car station and ride the cable car down. (Maybe visit the Ngong Ping Village for gift shops along the way.) Most of the tourists are just riding the cable cars up at that time. You can be back to the airport around noon or so.

If you wait until 10 am for the cable car to open, you may not have adequate time to tour, or make it very rush. Because you are fighting with tourists who are lining up for the cable car to open at 10 am.

Thank you HappyFeet. I have printed out your information and added it to my travel folder. As we are not going for five months I won't be able to report on what we end up doing with our nine hours for quite a while.

Thank you, thank you, thank you happyfeet. We are at the airport waiting for our flight to Guilin after following your instructions today. The only variations were that we caught the early bus as we had two meals in nine hours on the plane so didn't feel like breakfast. Of course we arrived at the Big Buddha too early to do anything but look up at it. We did explore the monastery which was beautiful. At ten o'clock we were able to get on the cable car back to Tung Chung and had time to look around the Citygate outlet and have some lunch. As my husband was worried about missing the plane so we arrived in plenty of time. The funny thing was we couldn't get a cup of coffee at Ngong Ping before 10 but a kind cafe owner gave us some tea and tempted us with his delicious menu while sorrowfully telling us there would be no food for a couple of hours. The wind was really blowing the cable car around which made for an exciting ride. The queues were very long at the Tung Chung end when we arrived. We also found that we did not have the right money on the buses but we underpaid once and overpaid twice so it all worked out OK. The bus trip from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping was spectacular.

Hi oricus

Seems like you have lucked out on the weather. We had pouring rain, thunder and even hail in some places for several days. Today we are having some sunshine finally. And coming Sunday, we are looking at thunderstorms again.

Glad you enjoyed your layover.

Beautiful day it was.

No surprise there was a long queue, there surely were quite some visitors that were waiting for the nice weather to head for the cable car. And I'm sure you enjoyed your private cabin on the way down :)
