Using cash

We plan to eat breakfast and lunch at local street cafes and tea houses. I assume that these small eateries do not accept credit cards. Could you please advise the approximate cost of meals so that I can work out how much cash I need. Thank you.

For those outfits, you budget HKD $50 for breakfast and HKD $100 for lunch you should have more than enough.

If you are talking about truly local HK-style tea cafes, then allow $30 for breakfast, maybe $50 for lunch. These prices are per person and assume that you choose from their set menus. A-la-carte costs more.

Some of these cafes might not give you the breakfast set option initially as they might want to charge you a-la-carte prices so you end up grossly overpaying for the same items. If any tea cafe does that, walk out immediately as virtually every HK-style tea cafe offers a breakfast set menu.

They often do that as their a-la-carte comes with Chinglish translation!

The set menu is generally in a holder on the table. In almost all local outfits it's Chinese only, making ordering for tourists not exactly easy.
