Where to stay and for how long?

Hi,

We are planning a honeymoon trip starting in Hong Kong then to Koh Samui, Thailand and then to Bangkok, Thailand. We have never visited Hong Kong before so would like some advice on where to stay. We would like 5* in a central location that is good for walking to attractions and restaurants at night, also not costing too much to get to the airport and back.

We are visiting to take in some culture, drink some cocktails and to have a good walk around attractions before heading to the beach and then to Bangkok. Would 2-3 days be enough for this? I know this is never enough to see everything, but is it sufficient to get a feel for Hong Kong?

Thanks!

Hello SimoneyUk

Welcome to the Hong Kong forum.

See Top Question (FAQ) on the right hand side of the forum [Need a Hotel in Hong Kong] and [HK Island vs. Kowloon?]. This is a good place to start your accommodation research.

You can get a feel for HK but you will miss some important and interesting attractions. We usually recommend 4+ days for visits to Hong Kong, +1 or 2 days if you want to visit Macau as well. Most of our guests come for a week or more when planning a greater SE Asian holiday.

If you want to stay in a central location, then you should be staying in Tsim Sha Tsui (Kowloon side) or Central / Causeway Bay, etc (Hong Kong Island side). 5* hotels in these locations are quite expensive and would typically run to upwards of GBP 200 per night. At these rates a taxi ride costing less than 30 quid will seem cheap. Not worth taking a bus or Airport Express for 2 people in terms of economy or time.

4 Days / 3 Nights is the right length for a stay in HK, since you just want to soak in the ambience. Visits to theme parks like Disneyland or Ocean Park typically require a full day each. You would not want to do these on a honeymoon. You can cut a night if you wish but remember that part of the first and last day will be spent in travel.

2 days is a little bit too rush. 3 days you can typically cover the highlights.

5* hotels are clustered around Tsim Sha Tsui (on Kowloon side), and from Central to Causeway Bay (on Hong Kong Island side). For good reasons. Transportation is very convenient.

But don't bet on walking to "attractions". Depending on which it is, you typically need to take "something" (MTR, bus, taxi, tram) to them. But Hong Kong is very small, go to-and-fro places does not take too long.

Hi,

could look at Langham Place in Mongkok..all the culture of HK concentrated in one area..the local markets, sneaker street, fish street, bird street, and local eateries.

You will then feel the vibes of HK..though do go over to the Peak, and marvel that properties here can command over GBP13,000 per sq. ft. (think it was also mentioned in The Independent paper)

Though my favs 5* are on HK island, in the likes of Four Seasons, Upper House, Conrad, Island Shangri La.

Of course you could have a room in the world's highest hotel- Ritz Carlton over in Tsim Sha Tsui, and drink at world's highest bar(Ozone) too.
