we are an australian couple thinking of travelling to Tibet in August/September via train from Chengdu. we have seen the postings about entry permits being stopped periodically. is August/September a relatively good time to try for travel into Tibet?

can anyone recommend a good travel agent in Chengdu who can help with permits, train tickets and tours?

In August Tibet is usually open. So I don't think you'll have problems.

Where do you hear that the periodical closure? It only applies to March not other time. This year, Tibet will be open all year around.

Aug is the very peak time for Tibet, hard to get the train tickets. Spt may be better.

i have read on this forum that closures have happened in October sometimes and that you never know if you can get the permit when you plan it.

It's better to ask local Travel agencies, because they are know exact about permit situation. I recommend for you to contact . www.tibethighlandtours.com or www.tibetanguide.com . They are based in Lhasa

Lhasa and the Tibet Autonomous Region are usually closed each year from late February until early April. It is rare that this area is closed in the summer time. Read the following link for the current travel regulations for the Tibetan Plateau: thelandofsnows.com/2013-tibet-travel-updates/

As for travel agencies, I recommend contacting a Tibetan owned travel agency directly in Lhasa. Since all travel arrangements for Tibet can be arranged through email, you can choose to use a locally owned agency in Tibet.
