Kathmandu to Tibet Everest Base Camp

We are interested in the logistics of trekking to Everest Base Camp, on the Tibetan side, but traveling from Kathmandu. We understand that we must get entry permits from a travel agency in Kathmandu, but do we also have to travel via a travel agency if going overland? If we flew to Lhasa do we have to be guided from there, or can it be done independently?

Independent travel round Tibet is not allowed, a guide is must at least. If you can skipping other item (like transportation, accommodation) of a tour package is depending on if your tour company is willing to accept your suggestion.
