First time visitors to Bali - suggestions please ?

We have just returned from Thailand and friends of ours have suggested that we consider Bali for our next holiday. We have two teenage sons and we enjoy staying at a nice resort with good pool facilities, love to shop & eat out at different places - any suggestions on areas or resorts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :-)

Seminyak, as an area, ticks all your boxes I think.

There are an incredible amount of good restaurants and you can shop till you drop!

You have a wide choice of hotels and villas. I will leave it to someone else to suggest the best for you.

I've copy and pasted these from recent posts I have written. It's a short description of the most popular areas.

Ubud, in the mountains so no beach, art and culture centre of Bali, heaps of great restaurants, accommodation overlooking the rice terraces. Art Galleries, art and craft villages surrounding, Big Markets, Monkey Forest. Ideal base to explore further north of Bali.

Sanur, East coast, non=surf beach as a reef break protects the actual beach. Village community feel, heaps of great restaurants, beach front resorts, villas or smaller properties. Good shopping. A paved walkway that runs the entire length of the beach of Sanur. My personal favourite. More "grown up" nightlife with live bands playing music from our era.About 20 minute drive to Kuta.

Seminyak, West coast so the beach has surf. More glitzy modern. Boutique shopping, fantastic restaurants, Sunset views from some. Close to Kuta for other shopping experiences. My second choice, if that counts.

Nusa Dua, a purpose built tourist enclave of 4 & 5 star resorts. Good beaches and very attractive parklands and golf courses. Not as much choice for shopping and eats. Ideal if you want to just chill at the resort for a few days. A bit "out of the way" of "Bali". Also more expensive for shopping and eats than other areas.

Lembongan Island, short boat trip from Bali, great for just chilling and relaxing and water sports.

The Gili Islands, further away from Bali, but again great for "doing nothing" and water sports.

Amed, much more traditional, on the coast, quieter. Good area for snorkling.

Kuta/Legian, the nightlife and main tourist centre. Countless restaurant, shopping and entertainment options. Depending on where you stay it can be noisy, but other resorts are quiet and peaceful. Hustle and bustle. On the west coast with very popular surf beach.

That is an overview of the major centres, of course there are heaps of other places that aren't as touristy or specialise in diving etc and are further away from these main centres.
