black sand vs. white sand beach

Does anyone know is there any difference between staying somewhere that has a black sand beach to staying somewhere with a white sand beach, or is it purely aesthetic?

Black sand tends to be hotter as it absorbs the heat, but the solution to this is to wear some sort of footwear. It also makes you look like you've been wrestling with Bert the Chimney Sweep if you get any black sand on you.

I think white sand is better if you are planning on snorkelling - you get to see better if the water is a little choppy, when it's black sand, everything gets murky.

the really fine black sand gets embedded in lycra swimmers and no matter how much to try you cannot get it out.
