The importance of Travel Insurance !!!!!!!!!!!!!

We booked a cycling tour with a well know tour company in Bali for myself, son 15yrs, his friend 16yrs and my daughter 11.

All was going well till about 500 meters from the end of the tour when my daughter didn't brake hard enough going down an extremely step hill with a sharp (almost 90 degree ) turn at the bottom. As a resullt she went over an embackment and landed 2 metres down on a ledge.!! Fortunately she did brake because if she had been going at a greater speed she would have flown over the edge and landed who knows where as we could see the bottom !!!!!!

Initially her injuries appeared minor - small cuts and bruising . A short time later she started to be sick and we quickly started the drive back to Kuta (we were 45min. away). The tour company wanted to take us to Denpasar but on the way I rang my travel insurance co and they said they wanted us to go straight to International SOS CLINIC in Kuta.

To cut a long story short. A CT scan revealed she had ruptured her spleen and our insurance company organised for an air ambulance from Perth to come to Bali to collect us and also early commercial flights for the boys. The boys were escorted to airport and assisted with check in etc. and my daughter and I were transported back to Perth by private Jet with full medical equipment, doctor , nurse and crew. Met at Perth by ambulance and taken to Hospital .

Total cost to me - $83 for the insurance. Total Cost to insurance company approx $100,000 AUD !!!!!!!

My daughter is now stable in hospital here in Perth and planning her next trip to Bali !!!! We had a great holiday before this White water rafting, waterbom park etc and the bike tour was great up to this point.

We had been planning this trip for about 9 months and I almost forgot about the insurance - arranging the week before we left. In future insurance will be at the top of my list of things to do because its not just about lost luggage as we have now found out!

What a good reminder to everyone!

Your poor daughter, I hope she feels much better very soon. You must all be very disapointed about your holiday ending early. I hope you can organise another holiday soon, minus the bike ride!!

Hi travelwithchi pleased to hear your daughter is going to be okay.

I have been thinking lately, we pay for our trip with our gold card visa so we get free insurance with Zurich. Have not had to use it yet and would love to know if anyone has and how it went. Any problems.

Cheers Harro

Thanks everyone for your kind comments. We used Vero Insurance (Westpac Bank Travel Insurance). They were brilliant from start to finish.

With any gold card insurance though contact your bank for a brochure re limits and conditions and note down in your phone or diary their contact number for the country you are visiting.

Also ring your credit card company and advise them any time you leave the country with the dates of travel, destinations and a contact phone number while you are away. Most Banks will block overseas transactions if they have not been advised its you using the card.

Hi travelwithchildren_8

Many thanks for the timely reminder. I am so glad to hear that your daughter is getting better and looking forward to her next trip.

Hi Harro58

I am not sure that the insurance with your credit card is comprehensive enough - it is worth checking with them.

My husband and I take out a joint annual travel insurance for less than $400 per year.

Unfortunate situation to occur but good to here you were well looked after. Good points and some good info. When we were last in Bali we were out for a day trip and were at the monkey forest at Ubud. My girlfriend got scratched by a Monkey just as we were near the exit. The guys there immediately treated it with iodine and we went straight back toKuta to our hotel then straight to a local clinic. My girlfriend needed stitches (they made a good job of it) and was given antibiotics. We were flying home 36hrs later so went to the Raffles clinic at Singapore airport to get the dressing changed. The Doctor at the clinic informed us that the antibiotics prescribed were not strong enough for the injury/infection and my girlfriends blood poisoning was spreading up her arm. He changed the dressing and prescribed new antibiotics. Returned to Munich and went to the doctors and everything was ok/cleared up.

If any accident, however minor, again occurs I would probably seek a second opinion

Going again in May - No Monkeys this time... (famous last words)
