Tailors in Bali

I'm going to Bali soon and want to have some clothes made to fit. Can anyone advise me of what prices to expect and which tailors they would recommend. Also do you need to book or can you just turn up? How long would it take to have three or four garments made?

I just got back yesterday and was surprised a bit at the prices some tried to charge. Aneka wanted us to pay 3 times what we eventually got some dresses done for. Some regular tailors getting mentioned here seem to be:

1. Janoko and Liza on Poppies 2

2. Aneka in Tuban

3. Brisbane in Legian.

I tried 2 and 3 and walked past 1.

There are tailors everywhere. You can just turn up unless you want something special. I would consider going to a tailor directly rather than at the recommendation of a tour guide as a 5% commission seems to be the norm.

You will probably be happier if you give them at least a few days but they can do a rush job for you if you need it.

To give you an idea - the price my wife got on copying two dresses and one straight skirt was Rp 1 million (IIRC) and I was quoted Rp 1 million for two suits in wool, one each for my two sons.

Be wary of the tailoring.

I have had a suit made, it was a disaster.

I also had a suede coat made which was well made, but the fit was not good.

I had a suit for my son in January for his ball. It was a lounge suit style, grey in colour. It cost 60aud and 20aud for the shirts. We just walked in off the street. we ordered it on Thursday evening and it was ready sunday lunch.

I would personally never visit Aneka again. Last time, the workmanship was terrible, very expensive and not at all good fitting. Unfortunately, I did not get the garments until it was too late to do anything.

This despite my going on the first day of my holiday and being delayed many times to collect finished items.

I had been three times before and was always happy, but that 4th time killed any chance of a repeat visit.

Be very careful when handing out work to balinese tailors. I have used a tailor who was highly praised in the forums, however I got very bad results.

They could not copy from pictures and made their own variations, the stitching was crook, the inside finishing was horrible. Especially for jackets where the inside is always visible so the finishing needs to be good.

Most of the dresses were several sizes too big. Sleeves were massive.

I supplied her with some items bought in Australia and they went missing, they were replaced by something cheap and horrible looking.

The most basic skills for tailoring were missing, and I had to tell them how to do the work.

What possibly could work is to give them a dress to copy, but still the finishing can not compare with something bought back home for a low price.

Do not pay a lot upfront en make very clear that if the product is not up to your standard you will not pay, or pay less.

Prices vary: dress can be 480.000 ruppiaas, or 280.000 ruppiaas.

It is a miracle for me that this tailor Cintya is so praised in the forums, maybe it is just me who wants a good quality product.

Tip: try to avoid giving satin fabrics (thin, shiny and slippery) for them to work with, these fabrics are very difficult to work with and every mistake will be clearly visible.

I want to have track suits made up for a sport team. Are there specialists in Bali who can do that please?

If you want a good tailor in Bali I know of a GREAT 1. They do suits, leather jackets dresses and anything or everything you need. They have loads of pictures for you to check out styles or take your own picture if you want a copy. It is best not to take your own material as they have a great range of good quility material and can explain the different fabrics and quility's, that way you know what your getting for your money. I had a leather jacket & some dressers etc made there WOW amazing the variety of leather is beatiful, I have been back a few times, I took a friends suit over to be copied, I then sent it to him he was so impressed he wanted 3 more with shirts "Pure Wool fully lined $120.00". They keep a record of your measurments if you ever need email them for things they will then post. Great service both Ady & Yonz so helpfull and cold water, airconditioning Bali gets hot. If you need a loo you don't have to run back to hotel they have a clean! 1 there. When clothes finished if you running late they will deliver to your hotel. I wouldn't advise bargaining as it is talior made it's not a stall in kuta. These guys do great work and its so cheap anyway. We all know how much suits & leather jackets are in Australia. These fully tailor made, wow I love this tailor.
