Gap adventures vs Intrepid vs ....??

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has had any experience with these tour operators (Gap adventures, Intrepid, any other one you've taken and enjoyed) in Bali. I'm a 30-y.o. F who will be travelling with two other Fs, too old to party hard! Wanting a nice balance between serious touring and fun.

Thanks in advance for any replies :o)

Happy holidays.

Hi there

I haven't done a tour in Bali, but have traveled with Gap adventures 2x. Once in 2003 a 28 day camping safari to Kenya and Tanzania, and March/2010 did a "comfort" tour with them around Egypt.

Gap is a top notch company. No complaints at all. They are huge on safety, cleanliness etc. Their guides are amazing and knowledgeable, Depending on the type of trip you book, you can get a wide range of ages. The more expensive the tour, the older the group.

Hi Giligirl,

I would recommend using Intrepid in Bali, intrepid runs there own tours and can control the quality where as gap tends to use second hand tour operators I places like Bali and the whole indo china area...

I have traveled with both companies and found a considerable difference in quality with intrepid.

More importantly I recommend calling them both and talking to the agents and find out what ages will be on the dates you are looking at.

Personally, I would highly suggest you NOT take any organized tours in Bali. Any pre-booked group tour will have an established itinerary that doesn't take into account your personal preferences. Bali itself, although it may have a confusing seeming variety of things to do and see is completely easy to organize all by yourself, day by day, and hotels, transport, temple visits etc etc are best done on your own schedule and do NOT require any outside tour operator. eg..want to do river rafting tomorrow? Call a rafting company and book it over the phone or through your hotel and they will do a free pick up and drop off. Completely hassle free.

You hear there is a special temple ceremony that afternoon that you want to attend? There will likely be 10 people from that very village who can escort you there, help you get dressed, etec etc for a very nominal fee.

I have seen people come through Bali on group tours and they never seem to have a good time as they are herded around to the very touristic sights frequented by the tour groups. (just my opinion)

Plus, half the fun of a trip is the planning.!!!

I have been travelling to Bali often on my own in my 30's. With the smallest amount of research, you can have a busy/relaxing/cultural experience if you do it yourself. Besides, tour itineraries and "Bali time" are unlikely to often sync.

I wholeheartedly agree with ubudpuppy and Veebes....... Do it yourself!! Especially as you are going with friends. Bali is too special to be super-organised and time constrained like you get with group tours....... and it is so easy to "plan your own"..... and it is soooo much cheaper than the organised tours....

I had 3 weeks, and 3 different holidays in Bali in Oct/Nov.... 9 days with my adopted sis, 5 days by myself and 7 days with my bestest mate....... the planning was half the fun (and I do plan on doing a trip report very soon :)!! I can help you out with suggestions for things to see and do, a tour guide and places to stay if you would like........ just send me a message :)

Remember drivers are only about $40 a day.I would guarantee if you get in touch with one, they will organise a private tour for you.I would suggest try Sila's Bali Tours...he is fantastic and good at organising itineraries (he was having a bit of a whinge on Facebook others are copying his trip ideas)....he has a website and is on facebook.Sila can plan your itinerary with you, rather than some others who just drive you where you tell them! Then look at accomodation privately, doesn't have to be expensive.Try looking at narasoma guesthouse in Ubud,1000 dreams in Lovina....both about $30 a room per night! We have booked little Pond Homestay in sanur, ida Homestay in candi Dasa and Blue Star guesthouse in Amed for our next trip, all about $30.

Meals will probably work out about $15 per day each (incl some drinks) and admission charges and trips are cheaper than advertised when you bargain on the streets...eg a day White Water Rafting incl pick up and food was $25 for us....and full day Bike trip in Ubud was the same price.

It will be HEAPS dearer to do this trip with a company!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!And its easy to organise.I did and had Never been to Asia!

NEVER G Adventures Bali and Lombok Tour

I would like to provide some description about Bali-Lombok Tour by this company,

which was a complete rip-off!

In terms of money that we have paid and the conditions that were provided.

Terrible hazardaous conditions, unethical behaviour of the guide, and visible signs of corruption made this tour disgusting and a wate of time/money.

Would like to warn everyone not to be hooked on this trick!

Dont add profit margin to the company.

My response to the evaluation form:

Unlikely to recommend a friend .

The price did not reflect on the great value experience as quoted. Also the tour usual size is about 12 people, our tour only had 6. The price of the tour paid, had nothing included and all optional activities were quoted to be quite expensive. If one was to travel around the cities of Mexico without G Tours, one would have more to spend on bettering the experience and activities.

The tour itself was easy to navigate but was not all that brilliant in terms of what we paid to go on. Mexico is a great city but there are many other tours who can do a better tour for a better price.

The itinerary was satisfactory in terms of how the structure went from city to city. The day to day activities were all optional which we thought was included in price, however it is not. Orientation walk in the cities were great and the history given for each place.

Excellent safely of the tour.

Ivan, charming and remarkable guide and friend! The tour was only complete with him being our amazing tour guide, but also as a companion for the whole trip. He made it unforgettable. His professionalism and patience really made his performance top rated ! One of the best tour guides the entire group has ever met! Highly recommended!

Hotel metropol in Mexico city was way below standards and expectation. The price didn't even include breakfast! May I suggest a better option, with rooftop breakfast md dinner buffet included, and a greater room and better service : hostel amigo suites downtown. The place shows off Mexico a lot more and hugely better service in comparison with Metropol. Carmen Inn in Playa was a good place, but again I would recommend a better place just down the road, La Pasion Boutique hotel. Since the tour is a small group, a smaller boutique would have been a lot better.

The transportation for such a small group could have been provided with a better service. The upgrade extra service was way over priced and the group felt that it was too expensive even though we already paid for the public cheaper service.

The tour document sent to me stated to exchange to USdollars instead of pesos!!! Mexico city through to Merida only accepted pesos! The information given to me made me lose out on better exchange rate and I had to exchange usd to peso at the airport just to get to the hotel. Please revise the information on the tour website!

The tour could have been constructed with a bit more diverse options of places to stay and eat. Not that it was main stream but rather the tour was poor in choice of hotel and transportation services!

Everything was unsatisfactory apart from our tour guide and safety.

Would not travel again with G Adventures.
