First Bali holiday

Hi there,

could you help me with my first trip to Bali, please? I'm not sure which hotel I should choose. I'm going there solo in the middle of January 2014 for one week. I would like to be by the beach. I wanna relax little bit, have massages, go for one or to trips to temple, local village or trekking. I prefer smaller resorts than really big ones. It does not have to be necessary in the city but would be nice if it was near to market, restaurants, bars.... and I don't want to spend a fortune but up to $550-600 is fine.Thank you very much guys for your help :)

Sanur is not "for" elderly tourists...a lot of older tourists like to go there because it's more laid back and has a nice boardwalk which is nice for strolling, not really for wheelchairs lol. Also, some of the first 4 and 5 star hotels were built there back in the earlieri days of tourism..and those people who grew up loving that area are not 20 years old anymore.

One of the nice things about Sanur is that it still has a nice local flavor and yet has great tourist facilities and is close enough to other parts of Bali to do day trips to see volcanos, rice fields, and cultural areas like Ubud. It's very easy to avoid touristic areas in your day trips, btw....

Sole2soul I have to disagree about Sanur being an older crowd. My sons love it and have since they were teenagers, as do all the children, teenage and young adult, of all my friends who go there.

If they want to go clubbing they just go into Kuta for a night, 20 minutes, less time than it takes for them to get into the city from our house at home.

Seminyak would be my next choice after Sanur but I definitely would not call Seminyak "natural". It's very busy traffic wise and very western. It's also a lot harder to get into and out of for day trips to other parts of the island.

500Laura: I thought you wanted a smaller hotel? Mercure is ok but is a big chain hotel....

Don't get me wrong, the Mercure is a nice resort, but it's not a place I would choose when travelling solo.

The smaller, locally owned places are much better to meet other people and socialise.
