Current safety - Sabah

I read that two people were kidnapped from an island resort in April and the FCO are advising against all but essential travel to quite a few areas in Sabah. Now frankly I've always thought that it's more likely that I'd be killed in a car accident on my way to work than be kidnapped by terrorists in a foreign country, so I don't want to be put off by something that's just an isolated incident. Can anyone "on the ground" tell me if there is a real safety issue here or is it just a one-in-a-million thing?
