Jakarta - Merak - Bakauheni

Hi there,

Next year we're planning to make a tour trough Indonesia and I'm doing some research already. I would like to know how we can get from Jakarta to Merak, how long it takes and what it costs. I know there's a boat from Merak to Bakauheni (Sumatra) but I can't find anywhere how long that takes and what the ticketprice is. Is Bakauheni a good place to stay for the night or should we go to another village? Anyway a lot of questions. I hope somebody can help us out. Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi,

Jakarta to Merak is about 3-4 hours. You can catch a bus at either Pulo Gadung Terminal in East Jakarta or Kalideras terminal in West Jakarta. The buses that leave from Pulo Gadung are better as they spend less time driving around looking for passengers. An air-con bus costs about rp25,000 a non aircon is about 1/3 cheaper.

There are ferries and fast boats between Merak and Bakauheni. The ferries run 24 hours per day and cost about rp15,000. They take up to 3 and a half hours. The fast boats run during daylight hours only, take 1 hour to an hour and a half, and cost about rp35,000.

Bakauheni is just a port. There aren't really any facilities there and no good reason to stay. I would head for Kalianda which is about 30 kilometers away. There are some decent hotels here and some nice beaches outside town. Alternatly, you could head for the city of Bandar Lampung, which is 80km from Bakauheni.

If it's your first time, I recommend you to rent a car. Bus terminals mentioned above (Kalideres, Pulogadung or Kampung Rambutan) are notorious for their ticket touts. Not to mention the bus terminal in Bakauheni and Tanjungkarang. If you insist on using bus, it is better to take a local guide with you. A good alternative is DAMRI bus leaving from Gambir Train Station in Jakarta to Bandar Lampung. You can buy the ticket directly at the station.

Yeah, it's better to you to go to Lampung by joining a travel car which will take you from Jakarta to Bandar Lampung directly... But if you want to use bus, you may find it at Gambir Station at Central Jakarta (I do not recommend this way for foreigners)...

It will take about 1.5 - 2 hours from Jakarta to Merak via highway. Next is crossing the Sunda Strait by ferry from Merak to Bakauheni (travel time depends on the ferry size. If you get smaller ferry, it will take about 2hrs only, but larger ferry will take about 2.5 hrs). I recommend you to stay at Bandar Lampung, the capital city, which is another 2 hours drive from Bakauheni.

Hi, Michael and Jeanitha,

First of all, what`s your point? If you are a first time visitors to Indonesia why you choose so strange march route, and instead of visiting a really famous attractions (UNESCO heritage sites, Prambanan, for example) you tend to head into some troublesome direction, without actual purpose??? Why Sumatra, especially NOW?

Second point - traveling by local buses, however cheap it seems, is COMPLETELY unrecommended for foreigners. Believe me, you would not enjoy it at all.

And finally as the previous posters truly mentioned, there is NOTHING in Bukauheni, but a village. Where did you get the idea that staying there is full of attractions and comfort??? Or worth money and time spending at the very least?

Your chance to get a bus that departs on the middle of the night is very slim. Better to do the intercity travel by bus in the morning.

Also, if you opt to go with travel, most of them depart in the morning.
