Jakarta's main street

Hi everyone

What is Jakarta's main lively street or area? I'm looking for the Bukit Bintang (Malaysia) or Orchard Rd (Singapore) of Jakarta.

Also, where would the bars be? Not the touristy backpacker ones. Ones that local young adults go to.

Thanks

no sidewalks in Jakarta is as lively and safe as those shopping streets you've mentioned.

Shopping malls are scattered throughout the city, although some are located in the same area, you will need to take a taxi to get to one another. Some areas that you can consider is the Bundaran HI area where Plaza Indonesia and Grand Indonesia stood across each other. Another is Senayan where Senayan City is just opposite Plaza Senayan and Pacific Place is few kilometers away. Smaller shopping malls also made up the area.

All the above mentioned malls have trendy bars that are frequented by local young clientele. More bars and restaurant rows can be found at Kemang, South Jakarta but the crowd here is mixed (expats, youngsters, high societies, etc)

JKT is a pedestrian unfriendly city, obviously. So strolling at leisure along the street in unheard in this part of the world, people just harry up on their business, often applying a handkerchief or towel to the face to prevent inhaling the exhaust fumes ( with little success naturally).

The main street is Jl. Sudirman and its extension Jl. Thamrin. This is business area of tall office buildings, hotels, monuments, lots of traffic etc. Second main - Jl. Rasuna Said - government and embassy area, same tall buildings, hotels, exhaust fumes and traffic.

About bars to hang out (plus to those fine places Cirque mentioned) I also support checking things out in Kemang area - expat beloved district with heaps of eateries, bars etc. And... over here we do not do the division between bars for tourists and backpackers, obviously because the numbers of the first are tiny, of the second - almost the same.

Thanks for the replies.

About the streets, how are they 'unsafe'? Due to crime or heavy dangerous traffic?

About the bars/clubs, I was looking for ones that are similar to KL's Jln P Ramlee ones and not so much of the Phuket/Bali ones. I don't want to be in places that are too familiar.

Cheers

How the street is unsafe had already been told before:

1. Little or no sidewalk at all (how pedestrians are supposed to walk? On the roadside? Yeah, be prepared to get run by a motorcycle or car). Also, in smaller roads, the sidewalks are popular venue for food sellers from the cart.

2. Some part of the streets get minimal lighting, it could be dangerous at night (especially seeing a foreigner wandering around on the street at night is the main crime target).

3. During the day; exhaust fumes and the humidity (as mentioned above by Schonefeld) can make your walking experience terribly unpleasant.

4. Normally the main streets are 5-6 lanes one way (separated for slower and faster traffic), plus there are the busway lane, it's very dangerous to cross while the pedestrian bridges are in the appalling state.

Kemang is probably the closest thing to the bars/clubs area of what you've mentioned.

Amazingly - 99% of the questions we deal with in this forum - not about where to wander, but where to stay........ LOL

If OP stills does not believe that cities like that DO EXIST, please come and have a look with your own eyes.
