Depending on your budget:

splurge: major hotels will have their own NY eve programme, this would include dinner and entertainment until countdown. Some high end restaurants/bar will also have similar program. check out Skye Bar for rooftop experience.

mediocre: dinner at malls/restaurants continuing with clubbing. some malls have both under one roof. Check out Plaza Senayan and Plaza Indonesia. Those living on the outskirt will mingle to hangout places on the new satellite towns on the border of Jakarta to spend time with family/friends at restaurants.

budget: watch the crowd goes by from few "must go" places such as the square of National Monument (Monas) and Hotel Indonesia roundabout as well as Ancol recreation park. beware pickpockets.

Hello, MoetOz, and welcome y to our forum.

1/ Unfortunately your BEST option is to stay in your hotel. Just book smth nice like Mulia Senayan or Kempinski. All hotel offer NYE special brunch ( with free flow of sparkling wine) and some fireworks.

2/ Big crowds ( not parties), like in Monas are not recommended for the foreigners and first timers especially. For safety reasons mostly.

3/ Clubs and disco will operate as usual, may be with some CONGRATS and cheers at 12 o`clock, and no more.

YET if you are interested we can easily find a heap of suggestions in this area, - that`s the closest thing that will pass as a NYE party in JKT.....methinks.

4/ Private parties are for friends and families, as you certainly understand.

We have some around Monas... but rather on the modest scale. If you expect smth as grand as Sydney harbor Fireworks you`ll be disappointed. The best place to watch is from the skyscraper roof in central JKT.

There will be fireworks at Karnaval Beach Ancol but the place is usually very very crowded during NYE. Not recommended unless you stay at a hotel inside Ancol.

Last NYE there were also fireworks around Mal Kelapa Gading.

there will be couple of spotting location depending on where you will be staying in Jakarta. Monas and Ancol are two most common place where fireworks will be displayed and can be seen from major high-rise hotels in the area (so ask for room to have the view of the venue and stay on higher floors)

New update.. Jakarta's governor just announced that the main street of CBD Jakarta from Sudirman to Medan Merdeka (near Monas) will be closed for "Pesta Rakyat" (kinda festival for the people). There will be numbers of stage erected on those street and traffic will be closed (Car Free Night).

If you're into crowd & festivities, it's for you with usual pre cautions like travel light, dont bring too much money or valuable things, dress casually, prepare for rain etc.

But if you're into anything else, avoid those area. Expect that the roads around, to and from those areas will be affected.

Usually the biggest firework shows are in Monas & Ancol beach area, but expect a very heavy traffic if you're travelling by car. Unless you're staying in hotels within walking distance of those spots.
