Hi,

From Kansai, you can take JR Limited Express "Haruka"

costs about 3500 Yen, 70 minutes to Kyoto.

Suggest you get a 14days JR pass since you are intending to visit Osaka (Shin-Osaka), Tokyo, Hiroshima and Kyoto which are all on Tokaido Sanyo Shinkansen. Also allows you to travel beyond Kansai and Kanto since it is a all Japan Pass.

With JR Pass, your Haruka is included in JR Pass.

From Hiroshima, you will probably like to vist Miyajima, an island off Hiroshima. You may also like to visit Korakoen, Okayama and Himeji Castle, Himeji.

From Kyoto, you may want to visit Nara and the town surrounding Lake Biwa like Hikone, Otsu and Nagahama.

From Tokyo, you can do day trips to Kamakura and Hakone. For Fuji, you can take day trip to Kawaguchi which is the 5th station of Mt. Fuji which offers one of the most splendid view of Mt. Fuji.

Have a enjoyable trip.

Cheers!

Bernard

Thank you.

I understand we have to purchase the 14 days JR pass outside of Japan. We are arriving in Kyoto on May 16, is it better to activate the pass the next day. We are leaving on May 31.

It all depends on which days you plan to do the most travel on Japan Rail. For sightseeing within Kyoto, Japan Rail is only very slightly useful. Assuming that KIX (Osaka) is your airport for both arrival and departure, you could make your non-rail pass day at the very beginning or the very end of your trip. If you're planning to visit Osaka, then you could stay in a hotel there for the first or last days(s) of your trip and have that be the period when you're without your rail pass. Consider reserving your Kyoto hotel right now, since they do have very busy periods there.
