Coastal resorts to relax?

I'm currently in japan for a month, for the first time. Whilst I'm traveling a lot using up a JR pass over the next two weeks, I'm looking for a relaxing place to stay, ideally coastal, not too far from Tokyo ( within 2 hours, so I guess that's quite a range). Ideally traditionally japanese with good food.

Thanks in advance.

Izu Peninsula is not too far from Tokyo. It is a lovely area with so many places to choose to base yourself.

Alternatively the Boso Peninsula in Chiba prefecture next to Tokyo.

Or Kanagawa - where you have the ancient city of Kamakura on Sagami Bay then the Shonan coast.

I would suggest Shimoda, Kamakura, or perhaps Atami.

If you are using the JR Pass, it might be better to enlarge your traveling area.

Murakami is about 180 minutes on JR Joetsu Shinkansen and a change for ltd exp or normal train at JR Niigata.
