tour groups/companies? solo female traveller

I'd really like to go with a tour group for my first trip to Japan. I'm a solo female traveller and haven't been out of the country yet, so being with a group will give some security for me.

What are some good companies/groups? I've found a few online, but want to have plenty of options.

Not to discourage your from an escorted tour - Japan is quite easy and safe to tour on your own and at your own pace. Take a look around http://www.japan-guide.com/ for ideas. The site has some suggested itineraries.

I realize that, and I'll be doing any future travelling in Japan without a group, but for the first time I'm gonig to need a lot of help and want the safety of being with other people at all times (i'm a 21yr female)

Intrepid is one company that seems to be well thought of and has smaller group tours. See http://www.intrepidtravel.com/

You mention that you haven't been out of the country yet. Have you thought of doing a short trip to Canada or Mexico just to know what to expect with border formalities, different currency, and a way of life that is even a little bit different? It could be a good practice run.

When are you going? I'm also (a female here!) traveling by my lonesome on April 2013.

Intrepid are very well thought of. I think it is an excellent idea to do a tour for your first time in Japan. Although it's very easy to see Japan solo (Japan is safe & user friendly for tourists), seasoned travellers can forget (or just don't know what it is like) being young, female & alone in a foreign country for the very first time. Although it's a long time ago now, I certainly can recall feeling completely overwhelmed & alone at Narita Airport & just figuring out how to get into Tokyo was a huge challenge.

Of course, the main reason why so many young Japanese women travel alone in Europe is that they have been brought up in a country where they are completely safe. Having worked with Japanese students for many years I never ceased to be amazed that they travelled in places where I would be nervous and rarely came to any harm. The only two problems I heard about were one young woman who was punched in the face when she held onto her suitcase when someone tried to take it in Marseille and another who had 'advances' made to her by the owner of an up market clothes shop in Milan. Such things don't happen in Japan.

I felt exactly the same when I first arrived at Narita but the internet and the increasing use of English in Japanese signage has made life a great deal easier.

My first trip to Japan (solo, female) was on a self-guided adventure through Inside Japan. I don't on the whole like tours and this was a chance to feel secure in a country that was a very new experience.

The next two trips were tailored trips where I gave inside Japan a list of places that fascinated me and also asked them for suggestions for places they thought I might like. Inside Japan is very good at taking you beyond the standard western tourist places.

Inside Japan also runs tours which seem to get good reviews. The variety offered looks good as well. Certainly my experience with the company has been fantastic. They have been honest, efficient and very knowledgeable.
