Hotels/ryokans for 5

We are a family of 2 adults and three boys (18,19 and 21)

Any recommendations for reasonably priced accommodation with rooms for 3 or things we shouldn't miss aside from the main sies?

Thanks

Some further information will guide replies to your question.

What areas and/or cities will you visit in Japan?

What is your budget?

We do not have a firm itinerary yet, I was thinking...

3-4 days in Tokyo

3-4 days kyoto

2 days takayama

1 day Nara

1 day Hiroshima

Would appreciate any ideas, we actually have 17 full days

I was thinking about $300-$400 for accommodation per night

Thanks

Try searching Minshuku ( a more down to earth, homey style inn, cheaper than ryokan) there are some fantastic places out there. Don't forget Japanese traditional style inns normally include dinner in their price.

Consider a machi-ya rental (traditional townhouse) in Kyoto - self catering & a little more space. Try searching Vacation rentals VRBO or similar.

Business hotel chains like Toyoko Inn are a good deal, they offer membership discounts.

Don't forget Youth Hostels - some may be institution-like but in Japan they offer both regular rooms & also family/group rooms with tatami - at budget prices.

Also think about Buddhist Temple lodging – Shukubo.

$400 per night (in total) you will looking at the budget end of things at a ryokan.

Ryokan have a tatami room which serves as a sitting room during the day with a table and cushions & at night the staff will put out your futons. Traditional ones will have a large room, sometimes more than one. The room may or may not have separate spaces divided by fusuma sliding doors to create different rooms. Usually the more expensive it is, the more rooms & space you'll get.
