Can I find decent hotels in Tokyo and surrounding areas and other cities for about 100 usd or less??? Please give some examples for clean 2-3 star hotels that are in ok areas..thanks

Youth hostels are great in both cities, lots of choices.

Then there is this kind of place, very comfy, clean and reliable. This one is in Kyoto:

Check the websites for Comfort Hotel, Toyoko Inn, and Super Hotel. These are the lowest-priced chains of business hotels. Room rates for these chains includes free breakfast buffet. All provide clean rooms with private bathroom, and are located in safe areas. Crime rates in Japan are very low, so no worries anywhere.

You can also find good deals on the Rakuten Travel and Jalan websites.

"Foul cleaning chemical smell" is not something we can assess since not everyone shares the same sensitivity when it comes to chemicals.

Chinese rates? Or are you just reading Kanji? Which site are you referring to? Change the language of the website in English if available.
