Suitable escorted January tour for older lady?

My 75 year old mother is going to have a week in Tokyo with us in January. She's never been to Japan before. After we leave, she would like to do an escorted tour for a week or so. Can you recommend any operators that might be suitable? She's fit and healthy but nervous about travelling by herself in a new country so would definitely need something escorted, not independent.

I've looked at Viator, but they are only 2 or 3 day tours; she will have already had a week in Tokyo, so doesn't need more time there. It seems many of the Australia based operators don't operate in the winter.

Your advice is greatly appreciated.

I looked at the agents that have gotten favorable mentions here: Intrepid, Inside Japan, Samurai. None has one-week tours in January. Japanican has some tours that might fit her needs, or perhaps you could stitch together a couple of tours--maybe one that goes from Tokyo to Kyoto, and one that starts in Kyoto. She still might need to make her way back to her departure airport, but it should be possible to arrange tickets and travel instructions for her before you leave Japan. http://japanican.com/en/tour/

Thanks for your help - I have found the same thing regarding a lack of options at this time of the year. As it is, we'll just make the most of an unexpected opportunity to allow her to experience a country to which she's never been (and neither have we, although we will have a week under our belts by the time she arrives!!!).

Perhaps she will return with an organised group some other time.

thanks again.

With a little preparation (and with the benefit of your week's experience), she may find it a great adventure.

You may already be aware of these resources:

http://www.japan-guide.com/ has pages on all the major destinations. Each page has Access and Admission tabs leading to info on transportation, hours of operation and the like. The web site has lots of other useful information. Search for these: LUGGAGE FORWARDING, JR PASS, SUICA/NEX.

http://www.hyperdia.com/ http://www.jorudan.co.jp/english/ and https://maps.google.com/ can help you get around.

http://travel.rakuten.co.jp/en/index.html and of course Trip Advisor, can help with hotels.

Another thought: at the end of your Tokyo week, you could put her on the train to Kyoto. For less than the cost of a tour, she could stay at this hotel, right at the train station: tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g298564-d107118… , and take taxis to many of the nearby sights, like Ginkakuji, Kiyomizudera (lots of walking, much uphill), Nijojo (walking inside on mostly level floors), Sanjusangendo. All are in Japan Guide. Maybe a one-day escorted tour to Nara.

I agree, Kyoto would be a simple choice. The Granvia hotel is perfect. They have a fantastic concierge service there, and taxi stand directly in front of the hotel. With maps and concierge advice she can plan a most of each wandering one small area each day, taxi there and back to the hotel. There are many, many options for food in Kyoto station, a department store, several levels of other stores and shopping. She would have a great time!

I have forwarded all your suggestions to her and I think she's about to ring qantas and change her return flight to accommodate another week in Japan! Go Mum!

She said she really feels like an adventure, and after a week in Tokyo, she reckons she'll be right to tackle Kyoto/Hiroshima on her own,

Thanks again for the advice and encouragement.
