Itinerary advice

Hi,

My husband and I are planning a holiday to Japan in late March/April staying 19 days. We fly into Narita on 29 March and fly out of Osaka on 16 April in the evening.

I have booked (but can change-although it is a busy period so don't want to unless necessary) 7 nights/6 days in Tokyo from 29 March to 5 April. We will do some day trips to Nikko, Mt. Fuji area?? as well as exploring Tokyo.

We then have one night we need to book then from 6 April to 9 April in Takayama.

I then thought we would go down to Hiroshima/Miyajima for 2 nights then I have booked 5 days/5 nights at Kyoto. Will will visit Osaka one day, Nara another etc.

We will travel by train.

My questions are:

Should we get a 7 or 14 day JR pass-I think we could use a 14 day pass but some days we will only travel fairly short distances eg. to Nara or Osaka from Kyoto-so is it worth it??

Are we staying too long in Tokyo or Kyoto?? Kanazawa sounds lovely-can we do day trip from Takayawa or should I adjust stay in Kyoto to have more time left in the middle of our trip??

Thank you for your help.

1. Re: Itinerary advice

Maybe something like this:

March 29-Apri 1 Tokyo, buy Suica-NEX one-way

April 2 Nikko day trip, get JR Kanto Area Pass, use between 2-4

April 3 Tokyo, or Kamakura/Yokohama day trip

April 4 Fuji Five Lakes day trip

April 5 Tokyo

April 6-7 Takayama, activate 7-day JR Pass

April 8 bus to Shirakawa-go for a few hours, bus to Kanazawa

April 9 Kanazawa

April 10 Kyoto

April 11 Hiroshima/Miyajima overnight trip (leave heavier bags at Kyoto hotel)

April 12 Hiroshima/Miyajima back to Kyoto in the evening, back to same hotel, last day of JR Pass validity

April 13-16 Kyoto, Osaka, Nara while based in Kyoto

April 16 Buy 1-day JR West Kansai Area Pass and take Haruka Express to airport

Thank you for your help Sammyfloyd.

Would this work:

March 29-Apri 1 Tokyo, buy Suica-NEX one-way

April 2 Nikko day trip, get JR Kanto Area Pass, use between 2-4

April 3 Tokyo, or Kamakura/Yokohama day trip

April 4 Fuji Five Lakes day trip

April 5 Tokyo-Kanazawa, activate 7-day JR Pass

April 6-Kanazawa

April 7- bus to Shirakawa-go for a few hours, bus to Takayama

April 8-Takayama

April 9 Takayama-Hiroshima

April 10-Hiroshima/Miyajima overnight trip

April 11 -Hiroshima/Miyajima back to Kyoto in the evening, last day of JR Pass validity

April 12 - Kyoto

April 13-16 Kyoto, Osaka, Nara while based in Kyoto

April 16 Buy 1-day JR West Kansai Area Pass and take Haruka Express to airport

Is the trip Tokyo-Kanazawa feasible??

Is the trip Takayama-Hiroshima too long??

Thank you again.

You arrive in the middle of spring break so it is urgent for you to book hotels in Tokyo.

Both Tokyo-Kanazawa and Takayam-Hiroshima trips are feasible if you don't plan to add anything between the cities.

Tokyo to Kanazawa is a reasonable 3.5 hour ride. Takayama to Hiroshima is a 5.5 hour ride. Just make sure you are mentally prepared for these journeys.

Is it possible to go from Kanazawa via Shirakawa-go and on to Takayama in one day?

Do we go by train or bus??

Thank you again for your help.

Yes, assuming you will have seen Kanazawa already the previous day, and you will have time to see Takayama the next day.

Take the Nohi bus for this route.

Should we stay 2 nights in each Kanazawa, and Takayama??

Also should we stay 2nights in Hiroshima after that 5.5 hour train ride??

Thank you yet again.
