Internal travel please help

Hoping someone can help. Am sure this has all been covered but....

Arrive tokyo late july.

Got 4 nightw in asakusa then to hiroshima for 1 nights then kyoto for 3 nights then back to tokyo to fly out.

Getting myself flustered trying to sort internal travel.

Is jr pass worthwhile or better doing point to point for the long trips and day passes in tokyo and kyoto?

What would work out cheaper?

Havent been to japan since the 80s so am really a novice!!?

If jr pass is best whats the difference between the 2 grades? Is the more expensive one worth while??

I figured i would take airport bus or train when i first get there and activate jr pass if i get one the next day

All help greatly appreciated!

Green vs Ordinary http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361.html

7 day JR Pass clearly pays off for your itinerary.

I assume your schedule is something like this?

Day 1: Tokyo. Stay at Tokyo

Day 2: Tokyo. Stay at Tokyo

Day 3: Tokyo. Stay at Tokyo

Day 4: Tokyo. Stay at Tokyo

Day 5: Tokyo to Hiroshima via Shinkansen. Stay at Hiroshima

Day 6: Hiroshima to Kyoto via Shinkansen. Stay at Kyoto.

Day 7: Kyoto. Stay at Kyoto.

Day 8: Kyoto. Stay at Kyoto.

Day 9: Kyoto to Tokyo via Shinkansen, Tokyo to Narita (I assume), Fly out.

For Day 3 to Day 9, use the 7days JR Pass (28300yen). (You cannot buy this in Japan, you will have to buy this BEFORE you arrive at Japan)

http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2361.html

Day 1, get a 1 way Narita Express + SUICA package

http://www.jreast.co.jp/e/suica-nex/

(You don't need the 2 way version, since on your last day, you will be using JR Pass to cover for the Narita Express train).

Here are some shinkansen costs for your reference:

17540yen Tokyo to Hiroshima (about 300-350mins journey)

10280yen Hiroshima to Kyoto (about 100-180mins journey)

12710yen Kyoto to Tokyo (about 3hrs journey)

As you can see, the JR pass is worth getting.

There are subways and train lines within Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto that are non-JR , so for those, you will need to pay even if you have a JR Pass.

Within Osaka, you can take the JR Osaka loop line using JR Pass, but subways you will have to pay.

Tokyo, there are many JR train lines (including the popular JR Yamanote loop line), and subways (non-JR).

Ordinary vs Green car, the seats at Green car have a more comfortable seat. But personally speaking, the ordinary version would be sufficient since the regular seats are pretty comfy too. Also, many Ltd Exp trains don't have green car carriange, so for those train, you have no choice but to take an ordinary seat.

Ordinary car has comfortable seats with plenty of leg room. No need for Green Car.

Again many thanks. Given that there are non jr lines and day passes i really wasnt sure on whether to bother with jr pass or just wing it

The superfast shinkansen isnt on jr i see but thats fine

Just didnt want to pay for something when the daypasses etc might work as well

Please keep the tips coming

as you're going to Hiroshima, the JR pass is definitely worth it for the shinkansen.

You really only need the 'ordinary' pass. The seats are much more comfortable and spacious than 'cattle' class on aeroplanes.
