Does train from Hakone-Kyoto stop at Arashiyama?

Hi all,

We are planning to take the SHINKANSEN HIKARI from Hakone to Kyoto and we were wondering if this train also stops in Arashiyama so we could stop off to see the Bamboo forest on our way to Kyoto. I think Arashiyama is past Kyoto (not certain) so this could involve us staying on the train or changing trains. Does anyone know how to do this?

Thanks! Amanda

No, there is no Shinkansen station in Arashiyama. You need to change from Tokaido Shinkansen Line to Sagano Line at JR Kyoto station.

Thanks! This map is a little confusing to me, I see Arashiyama on there several times. Sorry for being dense but could you give me more specific instructions of the best way to get from Hakone to Arashiyama? Would we still take the Hikari Shinkansen?

If its not really straightforward, we could go directly to Kyoto and then save Arashiyama for another day...

Thanks again

You will arrive at platform 13 or 14 and need to walk to platform 31 - 34.

From Hakone to Arashiyama:

You first need to get to JR Odawara station from wherever you'll be in Hakone then take the Shinkansen. Unfortunately not all Hikari trains stop at Odawara, but the following Hikari stop at Odawara: 06:15, 07:04, 08:08, 10:08 and every two hours until 18:08.

When you get to Kyoto Station, transfer to the Sagano Line to Saga-Arashiyama.

Arashiyama is to the north west of kyoto cbd and train station. (Kyoto station is basically centre- south of the city).

Youll be coming into kyoto from the east.

So, probably best for you to arrive in kyoto, and go to your accomodation first.

Then go to Arashiyama. You may need to go back to kyoto station to get out there. There are other routes, but likely easiest to ask your hotel for directions.
