1) The normal way to do it is by JR Tokaido Shinkansen Nozomi service to Nagoya then JR Rapid to JR Gifu Station.

2) Depending on location and connecting bus/car/train ride, you may consider taking the Nozomi to Nagoya then change to Shinkansen Kodama or Hikari that stops at Gifu Hashima station in the suburbs, 12 km away from Gifu City center. If you are considering renting a car straight away once you get there, then you might go to Gifu Hashima and rent your car. Nissan Rent-A-Car, Toyota Rent-A-Car, Nippon Rent-A-Car etc has offices just outside the station. You may contact them beforehand for the best results (see official English sites).

3) Again, depending on the location in Gifu City, you might perhaps consider taking the Meitetsu train from Nagoya to stations in that area. If you are visiting a friend it's better to ask him/her the best route. If you have concrete address of the hotel you are recommended to check with Google Map.

There are rent-a-car (レンタカー) dealers in Gifu City and you can look them up with Google Map.

Shinkansen station in Gifu is Gifu-Hashima station, rent-a-car outlet is located there.

Shinkansen (bullet train) to Nagoya, then JR train to Gifu is the fastest option.

Overnight highway bus is a good budget option.

Car hire is definitely doable, tocoo! Is a good place to book cat rental, note to, that the staff at the hire places may not speak much English!

With a car from Gifu, Gujo Hachiman, Gero Onsen, Takayama and Shirakawago in the north; Inuyama Castle and Meiji Mura, Magome/Tsumago in the east might be visited.

Gifu City has Gifu (Inabayama) Castle ruins, known among the Japanese for its history.
