2 nights between Hakuba/Nagano and Kyoto

We are flying to japan on June 28 for 10 days and have booked Tokyo, 2 nights to do some mountain biking in Hakuba and 3 nights in Kyoto. We have 2 nights free between Hakuba and Kyoto. the option I am considering at the moment is Matsumoto, but we are open to another experience or non-city option. We have a JR pass. Can anyone suggest somewhere to visit for these 2 nights on the way to Kyoto?

Unless you travel as far as Hiroshima or Sendai within JR Pass validity period, it does not pay off.

You may have time to take the Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route westward (travelling Hakuba - Shinano-Omachii -Ogizawa) possibly with a night at Murode then travel Tateyama - Toyama (private railway) - Kanazawa for an overnight stop at Kanazawa. Kyoto is a few hours by JR train from Kanazawa.
