Want to spend three weeks in Japan

I am travelling to Japan for a wedding in April next year. I have been trying to research the areas but for some reason am a bit confused.

I want to fly to Osaka, around 17 March, spend a few days here and travel to Hiroshima, Kobe and Kyoto doing day trips, move to Tokyo for a week, then up to Sapporo for a week for the wedding and to fly home.

Is this too long in each place? I have been researching through the destinations experts but I seem a bit confused as to where to stay and length of time.

Any suggestions?

There is no such thing as "too long". You can't see all of Hokkaido in a month, for instance.

I don't really understand your proposed itinerary, i.e. what are the specific nights per city? Anyway, some suggestions:

- Interested in cherry blossoms? You might consider arranging your itinerary around it. Or change your travel dates -- http://www.japan-guide.com/e/e2011_when.html . Please note however that the dates are not set in stone- it's nature!

- Since you are traveling between Osaka and Hiroshima, I'd explore the area in between a bit - Chugoku - http://www.japan-guide.com/list/e1106.html or even Shikoku.

- Considering the above - I've never been to Hokkaido but from what I understand, late Winter / early Spring might be the worst time to visit. Anyway, it might not be the best season for you to linger there more than for your necessary commitments.

Day trip to Kyoto? Too long??? You could spend your entire time in Kyoto!

As said above, there is no such thing as too long for most of Japan.

thanks for the info, as I said I was a bit confused about it all. I have been researching Kyoto and have numerous things on the agenda but just sourcing what others think. cant change dates and hopefully we may get to see cherry blossoms as the purpose of this trip is a wedding in Sapporo.
