takayama or matsumoto

We have two school aged boys and are traveling from Tokyo to Kyoto. Currently planning to stay in Matsumoto and take a day trip to Kamikochi for hiking. Wondering if this is the best plan, or would we enjoy a two day stay in Takayama more? Time is running out as we leave in three weeks. Not sure if the sights in Takayama would apeal to children? Any advice appreciated.

You'll get mixed opinions for sure. But I think your instinct is right. Takayama might be the better choice for adults looking for culture, but Matsumoto Castle and Kamikochi sound like more fun for kids.

We are adults and we loved Matsumoto castle.

Takayama is interesting too, but kids will love the castle. We had been wanting to visit it for years, finally on our 10th trip to Japan we get there. Loved it!
