Culture and History

I am planning a trip to the Phillipines over Christmas and the new year with some friends. We would like to visit sites and villages of cultural and historical interest. Most of the information for tourists in the Phillipines concentrates on beaches and resorts. While we will spend some time in a resort and on the beach, I would appreciate advice and information on alternative things to do in the Phillipines. We will stay in Manilla for a few days but would like to do some travelling as well. Where should we go: north or south?

While in Manila, you might want to take a walking tour of Intramuros (the Walled City) and Fort Santiago -- both used by the Spanish during their occupation of the Philippines. A popular tour guide is Carlos Celdran, a list of his tours and prices are on his blog: http://celdrantours.blogspot.com.

Another place of historical significance is Corregidor Island which was used by the Allied forces in World War II. It's a little over an hour away by ferry from Manila. The website with info about the tours and the island is http://www.corregidorphilippines.com/
