Another one bites the dust.
Obviously the Chinese are bigger spender so it is more economically feasible to fly the China route.
Of all the U.S.-based carriers, Hawaiian Airlines has the best on-time performance and has the best service according to surveys... how sad.
Even Jetstar Singapore seems to have terminated SIN-Honolulu flight (transit MEL).
Our Scoot airlines, seems like a China Airlines more than a Singapore Airline. Their new routes are all China.
Seems like these airlines has move all their planes to China. :(
This is another example of flight to Philippines being well patronised but yields (average price per seat) being low or below what airlines claim is the cost to them of operating per seat kilometre.
It is all the more surprising because there was limited direct flight competition from Philippine Airlines (which will no doubt be overjoyed at having a monopoly as it can raise the fares a little). With 25 per cent of Hawaii residents being of Filipino origin, the level of demand was there for flights from a couple of airlines - just not at the price this USA-based airline deemed necessary.
Stating that a particular airline route was uneconomic begs the question as to what particular costs the airline loaded onto the route. Did it allocate a larger than normal percentage of head office overheads to make the figures look worse? We are unlikely to ever know.
Hopefully one or two European airlines may gradually resume direct flights to Philippines. At least Hawaii still has direct flights to Manila, albeit from 1 August 2013 supplied by a monopolist.Edited: 11 April 2013, 09:45
