4 females needing itinerary help

Hi all,

We are four young ladies (22-23 years old) looking at going to the phillipines for a holiday over the new years period. We would arrive in manila from New Zealand around 28th December and go back to NZ on 11th Jan.

We are fun loving and adventurous girls who just want to explore the phillipines as much as we can whilst also getting some well needed relaxing time. We like to party (so obviously new years in Boracay is our plan) but we also like nature, history and some adventure activities. Two of us are well travelled and the other two have not been to asia before.

We have decided to skip Manila and just go to our first destination.

At the moment our plan looks like:

28th Dec- 1st Jan: Boracay

1st Jan- 5th Jan: either Palawan, Bohol or Cebu

5th Jan-11th Jan: either Palawan, Bohol or Cebu

11th Jan: Manila - NZ

We are attracted to palawan for the snorkelling, scenery and underground river. We are attracted to Cebu for the churches and spainish influnce. We are attracted to Bohol for the chocolate mountains, tarsier and nature.

Can anyone recommend to us what the best intinerary for us? Are we missing a destination that would be even better for us?

I should mention that we will be on a bit of a budget and plan on flying between these destinations but wonder how much travelling from place to place is too much.

Any advice would be great. We want to start booking some flights in the next couple of days.

Thanks

All are interesting destinations, but if anything I would skip Cebu City as it lacks good beaches, although as a Catholic I loved visiting its wonderful Catholic churches - there are also some historic Spanish era houses and a thriving, but rather dirty to Western eyes, market in Colon and excellent shopping at Ayala Center and to some extent SM City.

The other destinations are terrific. Ferry or fly to Busuanga for great offshore small islands and snokelling ex Coron town.

Siquijor is my favourite Filipino island: multiple stunning white sand beaches, a three hour trip away from beautiful Apo Island and uncrowded. See 'Siquijor attractions' on TA.

Consider an overnight ferry (in a sleeping berth) with 2go Travel. Sailings do not open until six weeks or so prior, but at the time of year you are going getting to Puerto Princesa, Cebu City, Tagbiliran, Bacolod or Dumaguete (if running) by ferry not plane can be fun.

I also found Sugar and Punta Ballo beaches at Sipalay, Negros Occidental (a five hour bus ride from fantastic Bacolod City) to be great. These are largely off the tourist track but amazingly beautiful with clean waters. Go by ferry from Manila to Bacolod via Iloilo for a great trip in a cabin on 2go.

Most of us recommend a night in Manila ewhen off your flight and two nights before you depart for home, the latter to ensure that you don't miss your Kiwi-bound flight. www.asiatravel.com has excellent mystery hotel rates including its 'Manila 5 star hotel, actually The Manila Hotel, for about P5500 for two including a superb buffet breakfast. It's an historic hotel in The Raffles tradition of Singaporean fame.

Enjoy a buffet lunch or dinner in Manila at Vikings or (a little less good) Buffet 101: about A$23 per head: fantastic value. You need to book by phone or email in advance for both.

Be aware that you will be travelling at a busy time so advance hotel bookings (particularly in Manila and if required Cebu) may be advisable. www.asiatravel.com also has Radisson Cebu or other good hotels.

I also recommend Philippine Airlines ex Sydney as it uses the modern Boeing 777-300ER and is vastly preferable to travelling via Singapore or Kuala Lumpur.

This airline has very good punctuality and is pretty reliable. Travelling within Philippines is cheap: see the 2go Travel, Philippine Airlines, PAL Express, tigerair or Zest Airways sites.

Clare,

Agree. I would assume they will need to plan the details by themselves and I expect them to fly back to Manila from PP.

Whether do they want to take the same day international flight is up to them but of course not recommended.

The whole trip may look like this,

28th Dec- 1st Jan: Boracay

1st Jan - Kalibo - Cebu - Bohol.

2nd Jan - 4th Jan: Bohol

4th Jan - Bohol - Cebu

5th Jan - PPS - El Nido

8th Jan - El Nido - PPS

10th Jan - PPS - MNL

11th Jan: Manila - NZ

Since you're out there to relax, I would suggest going in one direction for the time you're there: e.g.

Boracay (you'll need time to recover from the NY eve hangover) then fly east to Cebu (for the churches, malls, urban grime and grit), then ferry to Panglao (snorkelling - Balicasag, tarsiers etc). From Panglao, catch a flight back to Manila to return. The other way, Boracay and El Nido/Palawan (west) then back to Manila to return.

When it comes to flying back to Manila to catch a flight, Panglao has a few direct flights, Cebu of course is a southern hub (hourly flights at least.)

Adding to what JABuenafe said, Panglao and Bohol Islands are connected to one another by two causeways, so while technically correct that they are separate islands, since there is no international airport on Panglao Island yet, it is obvious that by air one has to arrive or depart at TAG.
