Diving Apo reef in Nov-Dec 2013

Hello,

I will be in the Philippines for 3 weeks in Nov-Dec 2013. My friend and I are looking into diving the Apo reef ideally while on a liveaboard. What is the best way to get to Apo Reef? From Mindoro island? From Coron town? Any good liveaboards that go there during Nov-Dec? What do you think about going with Pandan Island resort?

Thanks

From what I understand, for Liveaboard to Apo Reef, Coron may be a better place to start.

If you intend to do a 2 dive, from Mindoro will be better but you will have to stay overnight in Apo Reef in tent.

Hi,

Quiet a few dive shops like Divecal, organise live aboards for Apo reef diving. Costs vary, hence do have a look at the below links. You can compare costs and see the facilities. I would also recommend checking out a few dive forums for this. As for equipment, that should not be an issue since I have found it good in most places in Phils - Scubapro, Aqualung and the kind.

Do note that live aboards are not as popular as normal diving in the Phils, and even amongst dedicated divers, you will find very few who have done the live aboard.

Here goes a list of 7 such live aboards for Apo reef -

1) Dive cal - http://www.divecal.com/SafarisFS.htm

2) Dugong dive center - based in Busuanga Palawan (3D 3N) - http://liveaboardaporeef.com/

3) Cosmix divers does it from Coron (7D 6N costs 2050 usd) - http://www.dive-vasco.com/

4) Frontier Scuba ldoes it from Puerto Gallera (Oriental Mindoro) - www.frontierscuba.com/cf/c-aporeef2.html

5) Oceana Maria is a more luxurious option, gets good reviews and often leaves from Manila - http://oceanamaria.com/

6) Rags 2 - does the live aboards from Puerto Gallera - apo-reef-coron-wrecks-liveaboard.com/scuba-d…

7) Sea dive leaves from Coron - http://www.seadiveresort.com/

@ Gerry

1) Most live aboards leave either from Puerto Gallera (Oriental Mindoro) or Coron (Busuanga, Palawan). PG has more options for live aboards than the latter. The latter is generally a nicer vacation place.

Here is an interesting account posted by a diver which you might find useful -

cebu-travel.com/liveaboard_rags2_apo_coron.h…

2) While comparing the 2 options (Coron v. PG) as your launch pad, do remember -

a) The other places you will be seeing at the launching pad.... PG is more of a slightly crowded expat paradise (so PG not exactly as idyllic as the name sounds!), while Coron is more idyllic

b) Compare the travel time and travel cost to / from PG v. Coron.

How to reach PG? Bus + Boat : Assuming you leave Manila at 7 am, expect to reach PG at 2 pm. You must take a bus to Batangas pier, then a boat to PG Sabang (where most dive shops are located)

How to reach Coron? Flight : Assuming you take a flight at 9:40 am from Manila, expect to reach Coron airport at 10:40, Coron town proper at noon and your resort in Coron by 1 pm (naturally you will prefer to stay in one of it's outlying islands since the town proper is dusty lanes and uninteresting) . Coron is far more idyllic than PG and feels more like an exotic vacation.
