Boracay Island, Boracay, Bora....

Truth or False:

The official name for the island in question is Boracay Island.

In the last couple of years it became popular to use Boracay only instead of Boracay Island.

The nation of SMS world champions is following the trend and is now using Bora instead of Boracay or correct: Boracay Island.

Not too happy with the nick Bora, you can read comments here in the forum like this:

Bora is another place, a popular tourist island in French Polynesia.

What of course is not true.

Bora is a short of wind, a village in India etc.

Cutting the name Bora Bora in half, doesn't make it better.

Specially in a travel forum.

Try to do the same with Romblon...

The name of Boracay Island becomes shorter, but good news. At the same time the beach becomes longer.

For more than twenty year, the White Beach was 3,5 km long.

Since a couple of years you will find the info:

White Beach, 4 km long...

Where did this 500 meters came from.

The beach became more narrow, years ago it was much wider. But longer?

Regards from Boracay Island

Hmmm.. At http://www.boracayinfo.net/WhiteBeach.htm, I have the length of White Beach as 4.09 km. I know that I originally measured that distance with a GPS, but over the years I've used distance measurements on that web page which were arrived at by pacing off distances. I don't recall whether or not tdoing that might have affected the figure for the total length of White Beach.

Using the measuring tool in Google Earth, I come up with (as near as I can see) 3.95km. That's along a straight line from one end of the beach to the other -- a line which only touches the beaches at its endpoints and is offshore along the length of the beach. The distance would be longer for a person walking along the beach.

Why be bothered? As long as Flip-pinos are around especially those of Makati and Manila crowd, places will be renamed as to what they termed to be chic.

Quezon Avenue is now KesonAb, Visayans are Bisoy, Filipinas is Pinas.

Americans - Kano

British - Bitoy

Indians - Bumbay

Japanese - Sakang

and many more...

Its no wonder why Boracay is Bora...its a national hobby!

If Bill says 3..8 I believe it's right.

Former mesurments made it only 3.5 km and it was

May be on one end of the beach, "Mr. 7107"

digged a bit and on the other end Asya ?

Never mind - how about the wide of the beach.

We are not talking about Diniwid but White Beach.

Does the beach get smaller or wider ?

Last but not least:

Boracay Isalnd - Boracay - Bora...

Why so makulit? Who cares for a couple of meters more or less. Since when are distances in the Philippines measured on the centimeter?

I mean 500 meters is quiet a stretch of beach

or not -

who long is Diniwid beach?

Was the White beach much wider in recent years?

Any comments regarding the correct name:

Boracay Island, just Boracay or better Bora...

I mean it is Filipino country here and if they like to call there favorite vacation & party spot just Bora, because it's short in the SMS and sounds hip,

we foreigners should not start crying

be hearing the word Bora...

I believe there is no need to correct anyone using Bora, because all here in the Philippine forum knows that it means Boracay Island and not Bora Bora.

This isn't 100% accurate, but it's pretty close: www.openstreetmap.org/…

Zoom and pan as desired. Click and drag to pan. The north end of White Beach is wider than the south end, and the sand is much finer up there as well.

Why be bothered? Well from a marketing point of view it is a stupid idea to change a well recognised name.

And many people here on the island equate preserving the island's name with preserving the island.

"Bora" to many people represents the summer crowd who think they are too damn cool, descending on the island and trashing it. Who wants to emulate that lot?

The name of the island is BORACAY!

People from Boracay dont like it to be called Bora so why not respect them?

There isn't any need to change it just because a bunch of posers from Makati think it's trendy.
