Help needed for ten day itinerary

Hi, to be honest I am overwhelmed by choice. My husband and I are travelling to the Philippines in April (before Holy Week). We are spending 4 nights on Boracay and then have ten more nights to plan. We would love to get our PADI certificates and I understand Malapuscua and Bascilag are the best places to do this. We would also like to visit Bohol and see the chocolate hills and tarsiers.

Would you suggest we stay at Cebu? Do a day trip to Bohol? Spend time on Bohol? And then head to either of the islands to do our dive certificates? Is there much to see and do on Cebu or is it more of a transit place?

We love to snorkel as well and could spend a few days snorkelling before we dive. Should we visit Pangao or mactan Islands?

Looking fwd to receiving your advice.

You can do the snorkel and padi training all at bohol. This will minimize your travel back and forth. I am assuming from boracay, you will go to cebu on a flight either caticlan-cebu or kalibo-cebu. You will need to take a 2 hour fastcraft boat or catamaran from cebu to tagbilaran. Then take a 30 minute road trip to panglao, which is near to balicasag island. But if you plan to go to malapascua, thats a 3-4 hour road trip north of cebu city, plus another boat ride to malapascua island. You save time with the extra travel by skipping malapascua if your intention was for your certification as you can do it in bohol.

While at one of the resorts at panglao for your certification, you can already explore bohol.

There are some historical and cultural sites to see in cebu city, it all can be done within the day. There are some old structures as well outside of cebu city but still within cebu islands plus a waterfall or two, and/or swim with the whalesharks which is located in oslob south of cebu, this one is opposite of malapascua which is north of cebu.

If you want to see a panoramic view of cebu city, either go to tops, which is literally at the top of a mountain, but it will require a dedicated vehicle to get there, or go take the skywalk adventure activity at the top of crown regency hotel.

From Caticlan Boracay you can get direct flights to Cebu save you wasting any time in Manila. From there its only a short ferry ride to Bohol or a 3 hour drive to Malapascua. I would probably split my time between those two.

Just to confuse you Siquijor is another great place only a short ferry ride away.

Please read the above link to get an idea what to do in cebu. I hope you will have a better impression than the one who gave a recent jbr about his trip that included cebu and he didnt have much fun in cebu.

If you want to dive in Bohol and Malapascua, I would suggest you that after your Open Water, take the Advance immediately though I usually would not recommend this.

I usually term Malapascua and Bohol and hard core diving place. They really do almost nothing but dive especially Malapascua.

Most dive sites are >18m and you need an Advanced cert to dive that deep. The thresher shark in Malapascua will require to dive at least 25m. Kalanggaman will be 30m.

If you intend to take your OW in Bohol, stay for at least 3 nights in Alona. Get your e-learning started even before you reach Philippines to cut down the time needed for your OW.

Go for your OW then for the countryside tour in Bohol as you need to stop diving 24hrs before your flight.

Firstly thank you for your replies.

Mousehunt - if we complete the e-learning component at home, will all/most companies accept this? ie is this how most beginners do it? (I didn't know this was an option, but it suits us!)

Also, does the "finish 24 hours before a flight" is that ALL flights or just ineternational?

Al22tech - am I wrong in assuming that cebu is more a city that most people go through to get to other places? I am thinking maybe 2-3 days would be sufficient.

Tommo - hadn't considered Siquijor. I have read a little bit today about it. Would it be comparable to El Nido in terms of numbers of tourists? It sounds very chilled and laid back, a great place to relax. It has some intersting dive sites too. hmmm do you go there to dive or snorkel or just relax?

Miffstoy, my answer is a yes and a no. Its not really a simple answer.

Yes, if the intention is to use cebu to go around to outlying places. It has the 2nd premiere international airport in the philippines, and a more functional shipping route network. There is no need to go to manila if your plans are focused in the visayas and even mindanao areas.

No, because the airport is located in mactan, which has 2 bridges to connect to the island of cebu. As you cross the bridge, you pass the city of mandaue, before you reach cebu city itself. For places like siquijor, camotes, and malapascua, you have no choice but to go through cebu. If you want to go island hopping, these use one side of mactan as their jump off point. It sounds like a transit place, but remember this, there are tourist places where the airport are an hour or so from the city proper.

The beauty of the philippines is really in its natural resources, its natural beauty. Unfortunately, you need to go through highly urbanized areas to get there. It does not mean that these urban areas are just for transitting, because the philippines is also well known for shopping. If you google, shopping malls in the philippines will pop up for sure.

Cebu has some sights to see, but more to complement your tour of nearby other sites of interest rather than being the main attraction.

I have dived in Malapasua and Bohol....both are great but Bohol is far more suitable for novice divers.Sierra Madre on Alona Beach are great and very good value. Save Malapascua for another time , as you are best being Nitrox certified as well to spend lots of time with the thresher s.

Another option ..sorry...is Dumaguete . I just spent 5 nights in a wonderful resort called Liquid Dive where everybody dive and eats and socialises together.Have a look at their webpage and reviews here. They have lovely patient friendly instructors there . Apo Island nearby is a wonderful snorkelling as well as diving destination.

The rules about flying after diving apply to all flights.

Have a great trip.

I agree with ire.

Save Malapascua for another trip. The journey is just too long between Bohol and Malapascua.

If you really need another dive site, I would recommend Apo Island, Dumaguete/Dauin or Moalboal.

As for your PADI, I am not sure how it works (I am with SSI). I still feel that you should get in touch with the dive center and register with them. At the least the admin part is settled and what you need to do is to study the e-learning and get to start your lesson right away.
