Sight Seeing Tours

We are going to Singapore at the beginning of September, Staying at the Mandarin Oriental we will be there for 2 full days, we have some ideas of what we would like to do, but we don’t know if it is better to book some tours or is it easy to do it ourselves with using the local transport.

We are planning to do the hop on hop off bus, the night safari, botanic gardens the orchid gardens, Singapore flyer, River tour not sure which one. This is our first time to Singapore, and we are both in our 60;s so any advise that anyone can give us would be appreciated. Also can anyone recommend places to eat that aren’t to expensive and do western food as well as international food.

It is very easy to do it yourself and using local transport - public transport is very good and taxis are pretty cheap.

Search this forum - there are lots of pieces of advice about what to see and do - or google an online travel guide (Fodor's and Frommer's have lots of basic advice online for free).

I would recommend avoiding resturants in general (unless specifically recommended) - food there is expensive and not as good as the best choices - - which are Hawker Centers (outdoor) where many stalls are available and the food is way cheap and very very good! Food courts are also pretty good - are air conditioned and in most malls. If you need western food are various chain resturants in different price ranges, as well as the usual offers in hotel resturants.

I normally take an organised tour to the night safari (Tour East). Some trips throw in a buffet meal too.

As the person before me says, public transport/taxis are very good so during the day it's probably easier to make your own way round.

As previous comments - MRT extremely easy and CHEAP. Organised tours are expensive so do not get pressured into booking them - We were charged approx S$50 each for transport and admittance to night safari, although this is too difficult to do independently. Several of us felt the night safari was over rated. Book yourself onto a river trip around the harbour. For eating try Brewerkz on Clarkes Quay ( more to western taste - lots of beer choice). Food Court in Suntec Mall (not far from Mandarin) is good and varied choices of eastern food.
