Itinerary and hotel advice over Chinese New Year

We are currently planning our trip to Singapore and need some advice, particularly as we will be in Singapore over Chinese New Year celebrations. We are a couple (40s) who enjoy culture, wildlife and just experiencing the country.

We will be coming to Singapore on the way to Australia and will spend 4 nights here. I've been reading all your kind advice on the forums and have the following thoughts:

- Mon 15 Feb: Just late evening on the day of arrival after almost day long travelling; probably just brief intro to Singapore;

- Tues 16 Feb: probably city tour, Bird Park . Evening - River Hong Bao: see floats/ CNY concert at 8pm;

- Wed 17 Feb: City touring, shops, markets, Botanic Garden/ Orchids, Thian Hock Keng Temple. Evening - Night Zoo;

- Thurs 18 Feb: shopping and Sentosa. Evening - Drink at Raffles, See lights in Chinatown;

- Fri 19 Feb: some sightseeing, may be river cruise. Watch Passion Pasar at 3pm, possibly Chingay Parade then going to the airport for 11pmish flight.

3 questions:

1. What will be your personal recommendation for the Hotel? Our budget is maximum £100 per night, but preferably less. We want just clean and safe hotel, ideally with breakfast and good public transportation. For 4 nights, the options appear to be:

- £490 Miramar/ Furama with Singapore Stopover Package incl attractions/ transfers/ but no breakfast.

OR independently

- £315 Park Royal (both) but no breakfast

- £360 Novotel including breakfast if available

- £460 Pan Pacific including breakfast (if we push the boat out!)

2. What would you personally recommend to add/change in our itinerary? We want to enjoy all Singapore has to offer.

3. Do you think we will get to see some of the Chingay Parade? Will it take us longer to get to the airport on this night?

Many thanks!

1) £100 a night will get you a 5* hotel if you go through one of the Hotel Consolidators. Putting your dates into AsiaTravel (not necessarily the cheapest) gives the Royal Plaza on Scotts for $221 per night (Orchard Road), SwissOtel the Stamford for $226 per night (City hall Area), Marnia Mandarin $212 per night (Marina area), Grand Park City Hall $181 per night (between City hall and Clark Quay), Or the Novotel if you want to be in Clark Quay. £490 for the Mirmar/Furama with the stopover package is poor deal as the hotel is not a patch on the others listed here and locations are poorer.

2) Sounds good, play it by year when your there. Pick up some leaflets and talk to the guides at the Singapore visitors centre and they'll help you pick out things you may be interested in.

3) You might get to see it till about 2030 before you want to make your way to the Airport. The Journey wont take any longer. Taxi's should be fine as your leaving early, especially if you getting one from your hotel. There will be road closures in the area so it may be worth while avoiding the Marina Hotel if you want a quick getaway. The City Hall Hotels would be perfect.

Try Royal Plaza on Scotts website as they offer better deals than some of the hotel booking sites, we have booked in there for sg$169 per night including B'fast. It is on the corner of Orchard Rd and Scotts Rd and only a short walk to MRT

I am a fan of Royal Plaza on Scotts, and yest book directly through their website, is best.

RPonS is great if you want to do some shopping and it is close to an MRT (Orchard)

But if you want to stay in the City/Marina Bay

I would recommend Grand Park City Hall

It is also close to MRT (City Hall)

It is closer and if you really want to walk to many of the places eg Clark Quay, very easy walk; then there is Chinatown and Little India, for a little longer walk, or the MRT is right there anyway!

We also have stayed here and it is very nice and clean

The Pan Pacific is also nice, but a bit out of the way to an MRT

The joy of Singapore is going on their very efficient MRT system

Like another TA I agree about not being good value for the Mirimar/Furama

Your itinerary sounds nice too

Dont forget that the advertised price on Hotel websites dont include the 17.7% tax. For the RPoS, for your period, booking with the hotel is $244 inc taxes (room only). So it is about 10% cheaper at the Room Consolidators.

I'd recommend Royal Plaza on Scotts. Check out Agoda website. Their rates are much cheaper than the Hotel's official website.

Thanks very much for all your advice and guidance - it was most appreciated. We finally booked Grand Park City Hall for £350 (S$752) including breakfast with Agoda for 4 nights.

The Royal Plaza on Scotts looked amazing but was £430. My female logic said that's £80 extra available for shopping... sorry sightseeing!?

Any other tips you have for shopping or restaurants are most welcome.

We can't wait ....
