Eating in Singapore

Hi all.

We are visiting Singapore in April next year, and looking for advice on eating out during our visit.

Whilst everyone says Singapore is really expensive, people have also said eating is not too expensive.

We are looking at staying at the Orchard Hotel, are there many food courts and good priced restaurants in that area?

Thanks in advance.

Hotels can be really expensive in Singapore - designer luxury wares are as well - though not 'Really expensive' at least in comparison IME (unless you fall into the trap of assuming 'its Asia so should be cheap'). The hotels because of the land prices, the high end shopping because its high end.

Most other things are reasonable to cheap and certainly do not have - food particularly so. In all cases high throughput tourist trade will often mean increased prices - so hotels can certainly be pricey, as can high end restaurants with a big name chef behind them - same as any big city.

At the Orchard Hotel you have a number of malls in walking distance for food courts and some smaller restaurants - both down Orchard and also if you go up to Tanglin Mall. Dempsey is easily reached and has a good set of restaurants. Rare is the restaurant that will compete with food courts on price though. So you have plenty of options within 10mins walk and more in a quick taxi ride or longer walk.

You will find lots of choice in the food courts of the shopping malls. Here's a few links to give you some idea of what to expect. You may like to try Lau Pau Sat, Chinatown Food St and Makansutra Gluttons Bay too so not just limited to Orchard Rd.

Hello, food courts (air conned) and hawker centres (non air conned) are everywhere in Singapore and provide cheap and tasty foods. To keep your budget low you may stick to there places. Restaurants are more expensive especially those in prime location like the one on Clarke quay. Alcohol is expensive due to govt. taxes.

On Orchard road, you will find a food court in almost every mall along Orchard road.

If you are not into shopping Orchard road is not the only area convenient for tourists. City hall and Bugis areas are centrally located and very good areas to stay.

Whatever happens you won't go hungry in Singapore. Every pocket book is catered for, from a few dollars $3-$5 to $100's of dollars per head/plate.

One is seldom more than a few steps from somewhere to eat and the standard, quality and value for money is VERY high, certainly compared to the UK.

Hawkers/Food-Courts offer excellent food, vegetables, meat, fish to die for, at what can only be described as ridiculously cheap prices, but both exciting and as different from anything you'll find in the UK.

Bugis, a MUST visit area (imvho), is loaded with excellent eateries to satisfy virtually any tastes.

Singapore is as ''cheap'' or as ''expensive'' as YOU want it to be, it caters for all pockets.

So when someone tells you Singapore is ''expensive'', they don't know what they're talking about, or have never been or are so unadventurous or too lazy to look and see what's on offer.

Keep away from ''hotel food'', unless you're prepared to spend at the VERY ''top end'', hotel food is much of a much the world over, overpriced and predictable. Singapore is about looking to eat where Singaporeans eat, long queues suggests good food.

Have a great trip, the more research you do the better your visit will be.

I reckon u will probably travel down to the main shopping strip in orchard road. Check out lucky plaza 6th floor. There is a yong tau foo food stall, the meatballs, beancurb skin and mushroom are to die for. There is also a malay chicken and nasi lemak stall on the 6th floor.

In my opinion, it can't get any better than these stalls. While there is zero comfort, u get to taste top grade local food at less than 8bucks.

Whatever you do, it is not recommended to purchase any electronics there.

Nice bar, outdoor seating as well as Japanese teppanyaki restaurant in orchard hotel itself. Reasonable prices.

Lots of options in the many food courts/ coffee shops inside shopping malls there: ion orchard, wisma, 313, centrepoint, lucky plaza and cuppage plaza, etc. Inexpensive at under SGD10 per person.

Indian food at tekka market in little India will be memorable. Many hawker centers in Chinatown whixh house many old local hawkers.

It really depends on what you're looking for :) I hope you'll enjoy Singapore.
