cell phone tips?

any tips on using a cell phone in Argentina? We have a locked iPhone with ATT. What's your advice? (we'll have Skype in hotels, but worry about driving around Salta without a phone)

Thanks!

1. Re: cell phone tips?

You can purchase an international data roaming plan from ATT for $60 which includes 300MB of data. This allows you to roam on the local 3G system. This will allow your Skype to operate when you are out and about so if you need to make local or long distance telephone calls.

When in a free WiFi zone then use that instead of the ATT. 300MB of data is more than enough for 1 month when supplemented with WiFi.

Prior to arriving in Argentina or when you are on WiFi then predownload your city maps from apps such as Citymaps2go. The maps with operate off the iphone's GPS for free.

Please be careful with your iphone in Argentina. While many more people have them now;it is still a target for thieves.

This is great - thanks!

Anyone have any experience buying a pay-as-you-go phone in Argentina (which would hopefully be more unobtrusive and unappealing to thieves than an iphone)
