We'll be in Argentina by the end of April and would like to know what the conditions are in El Calafate in early May. Is it worth going there or would it be too cold?

It is difficult to predict the weather and especially for a short stay. However, as long as you realize that it will be cold and with possible quickly changing weather then it's ok to visit.
You will be able to see the glacier, however if the weather changes then some of the glacier activities may be cancelled.
