Puerto Piramides or Puerto Madryn

Hello, spending 4 nights in this area Dec. 14-17. Flying into Trelew early a.m., renting a car and driving to Punto Tombo. Planning on driving to Puerto Madryn late that same afternoon.

We are deciding whether to spend 1 or 2 nights in Puerto Piramides. While there we are interested in kayaking, walking, wildlife. We will be traveling back to Trelew, returning the vehicle and flying on from there.

From my reading, it seems like our interests may warrant 2 nights in Puerto Piramides rather than 3 nights in Puerto Madryn but it would be nice to hear from any of you who have actually done this.

Thank you.

Hi Seattle,

Puerto Madryn is our favorite of places to stay in the Gulf of San Martin region. It has lots of hotels, including some very nice seafront places, one of which has a glass elevator with a view looking out to sea. It's got lots of restaurants and shopping, and of course is centrally located.

The Gulf also has remarkably high tides, almost as high as those in the Bay of Fundy here in the Canadian Maritimes. At low water there's a wide beach. At high tide, the waves come right up to the sea wall.

Punta Tombo is the world's grandest penguin site, and I'm including Antarctica in the calculations. When you factor in weather, accessibility, natural setting, and the sheer number of birds (rangers told me a half-million) there's none better anywhere. A word to the wise: drain bladders down to where your gauge points to "E". There's no restrooms along the penguin trails, no shelter under which to wee, and lots of prying eyes.

Puerto Piramides is at the end of the paved road going out onto the Valdes Peninsula. It's much smaller than Puerto Madryn. The roads around the peninsula itself are gravel.

A few other points:

- Not all the sea lions are on the Valdes Peninsula. Less than ten miles south of Puerto Madryn, along the shore, are more marine mammals, as well as long rocky beaches.

- Argentina's Welsh country runs westward up the Chubut valley from Trelew. We think it's a little overdone in tourist lore. It looks like anywhere else in the country, and in any case ham-handed agricultural policies by Buenos Aires have wrecked the prosperity of the farms. Still, if you make it to Dolavon, you may still see traces. In Dolovon, visit the Old Mill restaurant. The food is excellent, but the host's real claim to fame is in making his place into a shrine for Welsh Argentina. We were impressed.

- You're probably not going cross country, but if you were to drive about a hundred miles west of Trelew on Route 25, you come to scenery taken right out of Road Runner Cartoons -- high mesas, pinnacles, and large boulders obviously rolled off the mesas by the Coyote. This is on the way to the Andes and the resort town of Esquel.

Thank you for the good information. Because we are flying into Trelew we thought we would head directly to Punto Tombo as this is really our reason for this portion of the trip. Can we then make it to Puerto Madryn late that same afternoon?

It seems like the activities we are interested in take place in Puerto Piramides which I think is a 2-3 hour drive from Puerto Madryn. We would still have 2 nights in Puerto Madryn if we spend 2 nights in Puerto Piramides. I am thinking we should break it up so that we stay in Puerto Madryn the first night, head to Piramides for 2 nights and then spend the last night in Puerto Madryn in order to shorten the time to Trelew for our late afternoon flight out.

Also wondering if you have any thoughts on a midrange hotel in Puerto Madryn. Looking at Del Nomad Ecolodge in Puerto Piramides.

Thank you again for any help given.
