Magdalena Island

Going to be on cruise around South America in Jan. 2010. Anyone have any suggestions if it's better to do Magdalena Island off Punta Arenas to see Penguins or just to Bluff Cove when we get to Stanley, Falklands. The excursions are expensive so won't do both..thoughts?

Weather can impact your ability to do either. We were on a cruise in Feb 2009 and did the Bluff Cove tour. Yes, it is expensive but we figured that would be the only time we would get to the Falklands so decided to splurge, it was the only excursion offerred by the cruise line that we took. It was worth every penny, we were able to see both Gentoos & Kings. We had planned on going to Magdalena Island on a private tour but it was cancelled due to weather. The other great area for penguins is Puerto Madryn where you can see literally thousands of Magellanic penguins. We did this as a private excursion. Check the boards on Cruise Critic dot com and you will find great info on the various ports. Have a look at our pics at www.gtbow.smugmug.com if you're interested.
