travel in August or September?

We are just barely beginning to think about a short (1 week) trip to Chile in August or September. We like cool weather, but we have read that winters can be very severe in the southern part of the country. With just one week, I am thinking that we may have time only for Santiago and Valparaiso. What will the weather be like in August or September in these 2 places? Too windy or rainy? Any other places we could possibly squeeze in? We would appreciate very much your advice and any other suggestions! (We are interested in history, colorful local culture, arts & crafts, good food, spectacular scenery, and of course Pablo Neruda poetry!)

The weather will be better in September than in August. Normally, it is sunny and warm in Central Chile. Both Santiago and Valparaiso provides lots to do and great places to eat and to stay. Valparaiso is a very walkable city and unique with its public elevators and hills. Santiago is a major metropolitan centre and offers everything that you would expect in a large city. In between the two, 90 minutes apart by road, is one of the major wine production areas in the Casablanca Valley.
