usd or peso?

We will be spending three weeks in South America visiting Torres del Paine (Chile) Fitzroy (Argentina) and Atacama, (Chile) Most of our trips and food are paid for but we will have several meals to pay for along with drinks and incidentals.

What currency would you recommend?

We read somewhere that you get better deals by using USD as proven by the cost of a meal at the Alto Atacama hotel which costs 55USD (£35 at exchange rate of 1.55) but 32,725 Peso which equates to approx £47 at exchange rate of 688.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Use credit cards is the solution both to pay bills and take money out of ATMs. Outside hotels such as the Alto Atacama, dollars are not readily received in Chile. In Argentina there is a parallel market due to the restrictions on changing pesos for dollars officially.
