Where to stop between Santiago & La Serena

On our upcoming trip, our flight from Easter Island is scheduled to land at SCL at 8:55 PM. We were considering renting a car to drive to the La Serena area, but won't want to drive that kind of distance with that late a start. Can anybody suggest a place maybe an hour or two north of Santiago where we might spend the night then get an early start to La Serena in the morning? It's hard to find any good info on towns with hotels along the way.

Santiago to La Serena is a relatively short drive for Chile, 6 hours or so. So there are not a lot of lodging options on the road as people don't really need to stop. There are hotels etc off the road in beach places. You might find somewhere in La Calera, which is just over 100 kms away and on the road. It might be better to spend the night in one of the hotels in the airport or nearby and start fresh the next day in daylight. That is what I would recommend.
