Best neighbourhood to stay for short term visitor

We are to be in Santiago for 4 days next March. We want to tour the city as well as a countryside tour(vineyards?). We will be walking in the city unless we really have to do otherwise while getting a local guide/tour to take us into the country. So.. From a traveling perspective what part of town is a good location ? And any recommendations for smaller hotels? Our Spanish is currently zero but we hope to pickup some rudimentary Spanish before getting to Santiago.

There was an identical question yesterday in the Santiago forum. Have a look.

The city has 7 million People, so you cant walk everywhere. ..

Tours4Tips operate 2 good walking tours, in English, every day. Also bike tours, and a new bike/ vineyard tour, which entails using the efficient Metro.

Central areas include Bella Vista, Lastarria, Proveidencia.
