Puerto Montt/Varas area or Pucon?

Hello,

I'm planning a trip in Chile for November. We are planning on going to San Pedro de Atacama and Torres del Paine for sure but we have time to do one more stop. I'm hesitating between spending a few days around Puerto Montt and Puerto Varas OR going to Pucon. Any advice as to which is better? Also, any advice as to what to do/see around both if we have 2-3 days.

Thank you!

At that time of year it should be warmer and drier in Pucón than Puerto Varas.

Yes, I know. It will be warmer and drier in Pucón. If you look at the weather link you can see the difference at the moment. There will always be a slight difference between the two areas.

what sort of activities do you like?

it is generally (climate is all about averages and nothing about your specific visit days) drier and warmer in Pucon. But good weather in both is always amazing.

activities in Pucon are varied and tend towards adventure sports: rafting (class III and IV), kayaking, ducky (inflatable kayaks), hydrospeeds, mountain biking, trekking. It's still not swimming weather in southern Chile, unless you're one of those Chicago Polar Bears.

There are numerous hot springs, within a short to medium distance from Pucon.

the style is a bit more woodsy, outdoor.

Lake District is a bit more cold rain forest if you head towards the Cochamo-Puelo areas, with a more untouched look there.

The city of Puerto Montt is a medium-largish city, with a market, waterfront.

the small city or town of Puerto Varas has a large number of hotels, many 4 or 5 star, waterfront, nice restaurants. From Puerto Varas, you can visit the Saltos de Petrohue waterfalls, the Osorno Volcano (paved to the ski center-lookout-cafe), Laguna Verde, town of Cascadas (beautiful), Frutillar and Puerto Octay (lake towns, quaint and very nice), drive around lake Llanqihue, Lake Todos los Santos, sail to Puella (and optionally connect to Bariloche). There's famous fishing in the area (Puelo, Ralun, and into the hills, past one ferry (Lake Tagua Tagua) around Llanada Grande and its waterways.

Thank you ABIIIChile! Is it worth it to take a day trip out of Puerto Montt to Chiloe?

It would take nearly a whole day to travel to and from anywhere significant in Chilöe as you have to take a ferry each way. I would say 3 days is the minimum if you want to see anything worthwhile except the sea !!
