Is there an atlas or good maps for driving Lake District

My husband and I will be driving to a number of national parks. Is there an atlas or a good set of maps that we should purchase. Where could we get them in Santiago?

There is bookstore on Lastarria that specializes in maps. The Autoclub publishes maps of the whole of Chile.

Where did you end up going in the Lakes District? We are going there in about 1 1/2 weeks. We'll rent a car and stay in Puerto Varas. 3 days in Puerto Varas and 3 days in Chiloe. Do you think that we need to hire a guide? Especially for some of the off the beaten track parks?.. Alerce?

We visited various National Parks and Regional Parks in the Lake District Area in 2010. We rented a car and found no problem getting information about trails in the parks. All the parks had Ranger Offices/Information Centres and places to park and they usually had free trail maps and maps of roads in the parks. Sometimes the Park roads were ripio/gravel, but provided that you drive carefully and never exceed 40mph things were fine. I wouldn't think a guide necessary as we found the main trails easy to follow and well marked.

Thank you very much. We are just back and did pick up most maps in Santiago. A little disappointed in the number of trails in the parks for the medium level hiker. Thanks again.

I am curious about your comment about the number of trails. Our problem is until we actually visit a park, we have no hiking map, and planning as to the number of days to spend in a particular location is thus quite uncertain. How many days in Pucon? How many days to allocate to the national parks there? The same goes for Puerto Varas. Planning to fly from Santiago and rent a car locally. Drive around a bit, visit some parks and do some hiking

Hi,

You are right. You can not really access information until you get to each park. We wanted to do day hikes and were disappointed in most of the parks. The hikes we did were great but there seemed to be only one-maybe two per park. So we had to change our reservations and stay fewer days (we usually book 4) in places.

There is an office in Santiago for the national parks where we bought our pass...they have a little information.

Maybe this year they have more.
