Is it possible to go trout fishing independently?

My husband and I are planning a trip to Chilean Patagonia in November 2014. We want to be able to do some trout/salmon fishing but cannot afford the high prices for lodges and guides, we also don't necessarily want to fish everyday. In Argentinean Patagonia we brought a permit, took our own equipment and found public watercourses from which we were able to fish. Is it possible to do similar in Chilean Patagonia? And if yes is there a guide book or maps in English that would point us in the right direction? In Argentina we had a brilliant book which detailed public access points for fishing called "The Trout Bums Guide to fishing in Argentina". Hoping someone can help.
