Appropriate clothes for Santiago

Hi - we are going to Santiago in February and wonder what the appropriate dress would be for sightseeing, dining out etc. etc.

Are they very formal there?

Thanks

If you go there for work, you need to bring formal clothes. But if it's only for tourisme, you don't need formal clothes. Only if you want to go to a casino, otherwise it's useless

Santiago in February will be hot but dry during the day. The evenings cool off, making them very pleasant. You might need a light sweater or top for the evening or for air conditioned places. It is cooler and damper on the coast.

Although men and women wear shorts in suburban areas, they are not common downtown. You will see them in Providencia or visiting a vineyard or on the coast though. Light summer slacks or dresses would take you just about anywhere in the evening. I don't know any restaurants where a gentleman needs a tie in the summer (not on my budget, anyway) and the atmosphere is relaxed.

A lot of people take their holiday in February and Santiago empties quite a bit. Some small shops close but most things will be open.

Hi Tazz

My uniform is black slacks, sandals and different tops. Day and night. I was there in Nov. when it was in the 90s a day or two and I still wasn't out of place. I always stay downtown and I dress business casual so I blend in.

My husband and I were approached a couple of times by people thinking we were locals. I just like avoiding people who approach us who think we are tourists.
